Their Finest Hour and other missions always ending in Battle Failure

Trying to do the Their Finest Hour mission 1 and its abuot 12 109s versus about 6 spitfires and always ends in battle failure.  Is this deliberate?  or is there a chance to complete this mission successfully or do you just have to be insanely awesome at shooting down 109s with 1 bullet to be able to complete it successfully?

 

Similarly other SP missions i find tend to end in battle failure because the AI spitfires tend to empty their ammo in 1 go then have to fly back to base so it makes the missions impossible to beat successfully.

 

Is that the intention?  to have these guaranteed battle failures as part of the campaigns?   (Not that it seems to make any difference.  Its a shame that the campaigns are not more immersive in the sense of things changing depending on success or failure.)
