Binding camera controls to axis results in unexpected behavior

In an effort to make slightly smoother videos out of flight recordings, I tried setting up the camera controls on the axis of a spare joystick. Doing so resulted in a few strange behaviors.

The axis configurator didn't seem to have any effect. Deadzones and sensitivity didn't appear to have any impact and the axis needle didn't move in the preview window.

The camera had serious jitter, again unaffected by settings including the noise filter setting.

The camera became "mapped" where a specific, limited range of motion was 1 to 1 mapped onto the axis. This is contrary to the expected behavior of the axis dictating the speed of a continuous motion, similar to continuously moving the mouse.
