Can someone explain to me what it is that make a landing forced instead of successful?

I would understand if a hard landing would be classified as forced, but I often do very smooth landings that is still classified as forced, and other times I do pretty rough landings that are classified as successful.

I don't understand.

Am I missing something here?

If you land on an operative airfield you will get "successful" even if the landing was not so good.

If you land over a territory that is not held by the enemy you will get "forced landing"

Okay, then I understand.

Thank you.

I landed on an (american?) airfield in England the other day in a 1944 Normandy campaign, flying for the 322nd. Got a Forced Landing rating, even if the crate was perfectly alright, not a scratch, just needed a drink!

Probably the airfield was not activated (there was not the spawn point)

I've found that if you land on a field other than the one you took off from you get a forced landing notice.

Yes, typically there are only one or two active airfields on any given career mission (1 for the player, and another if you are escorting another flight). If the airfield you land at isn't activated in the mission, the game's going to give you that forced landing message.
