Technical messages disappear during mission

I was playing a career mission and during the first half of the flight the technical messages appeared normally, then I noticed that the technical messages had gone missing. I turned my HUD off/on, then checked my flight interface settings, but my settings had not changed from before. 

 

I finished the career mission, then started a quick mission and the technical messages had restored to normal. Odd!

 

Or, is there some key binding or setting I'm not aware of?

This has been happening occassionally for the past 2 releases although I haven't yet seen it in the current release. I guess it is still happening then!
