SFC_Scott Posted October 5, 2022 Posted October 5, 2022 (edited) A protractor tool for use with the mission map would be great for pre mission planning as well during a mission. In the Army we used them for land navigation. A protractor with a small hole in the middle with a piece of string (from 550 cord) through the hole. The protractor and string can then be used to establish an azimuth or back azimuth from a starting point to a target, or from a target to another destination. As an example, Imagine you are planning a mission for the Battle of Kuban map. You are bombing a factory along the coastline (as in Kuban Playground Missions). You place the protractor tool over your target and run the 'string' out along the direction you want your bomb run to follow, or to a grid over the water where you want to begin your bomb run from, or your IP. The string will give you the azimuth and back azimuth to your target from that grid. After you start the mission and reach that grid, turn on the heading (azimuth) indicated on the protractor by the string, and you should be accurately lined up for the bomb run and in a position to switch to the bombardier position. Imagine your target is in the middle of the protractor under the blue 'string' and the 'string' is angling out toward your IP for the bomb run. The azimuth to your IP from the target is 210 degrees. The azimuth to the target from the IP is 30 degrees. From your IP, take up a heading of 30 degrees. This puts you on course for your bomb run. A similar tool is used in Silent Hunter 3: Grey Wolves Expansion. Edited October 5, 2022 by SFC_Scott 1
BOO Posted October 5, 2022 Posted October 5, 2022 Even the ability to draw a line between two points that calculates azimuth like CloD. @SFC_Scott I assume you are aware of the mission planner tool in the meantime https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/forum/62-3rd-party-apps-utilities-tools-and-other-content/

Thanks! I was actually looking for a mission planner that isn't internet dependent, and is windows based. Mostly for single player, as I don't have a lot of time for multiplayer at this point, and my internet isn't stellar. But the simplicity of the protractor appeals to me. K.I.S.S = Keep It Simple Stupid. In game it could be used for basic, rapid mission planning. That's all I really desire. Thanks for the link! I appreciate all the help I can get! 1
ACG_Bobo Posted October 5, 2022 Posted October 5, 2022 I hold a protractor up to my monitor every planning session to get a heading. Then center a straight edge on the center of protractor and put edge on desired map deallybob. Works like a physical wonder! 1

I actually considered that, but immediately tossed that idea out as I decided my setup wouldn't allow for it easily...
BMA_FlyingShark Posted October 5, 2022 Posted October 5, 2022 Would be nice, hopefully they'll also give us control over course setters one day. The protractor tool and course setting would fit well together. Have a nice day.
