Fighter Escort Pattern

I was playing an escort mission last night (D-22) and with all the weaving and powering up/down we burned through a lot of gas - the mission was to Vimoutiers, and right as the bombers got over target, most of my flight called bingo fuel and bailed, right as the 109s showed up. Could there be a better pattern of flying with less angle of attack and power settings to not burn through fuel so fast? I know the weaving was done by real pilots to keep speed with the heavies but I don’t think a D22 would be bingo fuel just flying to south of Normandy.
