Super_Tonton Posted October 1, 2022 Posted October 1, 2022 Hi all, I started to play multiplayer in VR on Combat Box server (living in Quebec City, Canada, this is low ping). I have an OK rig (I7 10700F, RTX 3070, Reverb G2) but, my internet connection is currently Wifi, my gaming setup being in the basement with the router upstairs. Many times, I've seen airplanes disapearing and reappearing randomly. I've been shot down by ghost E/A also. I'm about convinced that I should wire a cable to my gaming PC. What is your opinion on that? Thanks! Super_Tonton
THERION Posted October 1, 2022 Posted October 1, 2022 Hi, if you have the possibility to install a cable from your router to your basement, then I recommend to do it. You will get far better and definitively more stable results with a LAN cable. Your Wifi may not have the constant and stable performance, that's why you get some ghosting/lagging while online flying. I had the same issue except that my "pilot's room" is in the same apartment and floor but with good solid walls. My good internet connection (fibre up to 10Gbit/s) is rapidly degrading in Wifi mode depending on the room I'm in. So, for my flying hobby I chose the LAN cable and installed it - now everything is fine and dandy. Cheerio 2
jokerBR Posted October 2, 2022 Posted October 2, 2022 100% what Therion said! Also, don't even think on using wi-fi repeaters to "solve" the problem. They will in fact turn the problem worse, but I guess you already know this. Cheers. 2
unlikely_spider Posted October 2, 2022 Posted October 2, 2022 What's your ping? You can test your signal strength and speed on speedtest.net. Do you have a dual-band router? I've found that the 5ghz band is less prone to interference from other devices and neighbors, etc. I separated the SSIDs of my 2.4 and 5 ghz bands so that I can tell my PC to only use the 5ghz band, which is faster. The downside to that spectrum is that it falls off more rapidly than 2.4ghz, so it's best to use 5 if you're somewhat near the router, but may have to default to the 2.4 if you're far away. 1
Props Posted October 2, 2022 Posted October 2, 2022 Ethernet cable is always more dependable for consistent speeds and it is also more secure than Wi-Fi. Try to match the cable category to the capabilities of your router and PC ethernet option (usually on the motherboard): for instance using a category 6 or 7 cable will allow for the highest speeds you may have at your disposal, but may not help much if your setup is limited to Cat. 5. Get a good quality cable regardless as that can be benefit too and they are relatively cheap compared to say a new graphics card. 1
Super_Tonton Posted October 2, 2022 Author Posted October 2, 2022 Thank you everyone for the replies. Time to call the handyman in me and install a cable!
