AI aircraft height in formation.

I set up an AI formation and I find that the leader of the formation always flies slightly higher than the rest. Is this as it should be or am I missing a setting or something.?

This has always been so, planes are staged. The reason I would imagine is to help AI avoid collisions when moving around to keep formation, after turns or when changing formation. And if you have the leader fly at the lowest altitude accepted by AI which is something like 150 mt then the wingman will be staged higher than you. In any case if you want the formation to be flat at same level you have to handle all the planes one by one independently and set their trajectory and speed manually.
