I actually would really like to see something like this implemented. The black screen or sudden cut to 3rd person isn't a great experience

Something like this all over the cockpit?

Luke, the guy is just asking to occasionally have a couple seconds to say goodbye to virtual mom, virtual country, and apple piie, and blame his wingman…is that too much to ask??  I mean, they say Richthofen had about 20 seconds to probably say “aw s&$t, this sucks”, but Saburo Sakai flew 900 miles after being shot in head, and he survived. He could have faded out and died at any time.   So seriously, I think that’s all Stug41 was basically saying.

Ya, in game the sudden 3rd person camera is jarring and my first thought it always that the game had an error.

In my experience having worked in and around a violent American city in emergency services, people dont just immediately die when some arbitrary hitpoint value is reached.

Ive also talked to a few pilots in my time, some that had been wounded, one who even still had the 8mm they fished out of him.

I'm very certain this game has a 'wounded' function, or at least used to have one. In ROF a pilot could bleed out IIRC. A .50 going through the fuselage, battery, seat armor, then finally getting stuck in the pilot will still likely kill him, but he'll have at least a moment of being really pissed off.

Suddenly dying without a second of transition just completely cuts the immersion. If i'm hit in the head, have the screen go black. If I'm bleeding out, have it vision and control inputs fade and sounds drown out.

Bailing used to maintain 1st person view instead of immediately switching to 3rd person, I wish we at least had the option to use that, it was very immersive to bail out from that perspective.
