What see sites have you found out on the new map so far? Gravelines, Dover, Stonehenge... What else?

I flew past a lighthouse yesterday, was pretty cool! Not sure which one it was though, my Kent coast knowledge isn't great!

St Sever Cemetary in Rouen is kinda almost but not quite there - paths are laid but no gravstones (understandably) and the memorial is missing (im assuming it was built in between wars)

Im actually more impressed that the cafe and toen next to it (plus the chateau) are there.

The Supermarine plants at Southhampton are kinda there. Sadly not the iconic art deco buildings of RL but better than nothing although the estury looks a little off (not that Ill diein a ditch over it).

I could not see the lighthouse at the Needles.  Flew down the English coast and did not see any lighthouses.  Strange.

Happy landings,

Defo flew past one, near to Hawkinge

This is supposed to be the battery at Longues-sur-Mer; not bad but not totally accurate either.  The gun positions should be further away from the cliff, and the observation block is in a depression right at the cliff edge.

https://www.liberationroute.com/pois/292/longues-sur-mer-german-battery to see it for real

Don't fly to Fougeres to see the castle, it's not there (yet?).

We already have this thread:

Perhaps merge them? It is a bit confusing otherwise!

Amazing! Thank you! I needed a good laugh. Just another reminder of how far the BBC has fallen with it's Wokery nonsense.

This is absolutely not Canterbury cathedral. I've never been in Canterbury... but, anyway, all sources in the internet show a completely different church:

Looking at the assets in the mission builder, Heliopause's pic seems to be of the Antwerp Cathedral from the Rheinland map.

Mission builder assets list the following buildings with names starting "sight_nrmd_" which appear to denote custom assets for the new map.

abbeydardenne (Abbey d'Ardenne, Caen)
bayeux (Bayeux Cathedral)
caenabbey (Abbey of St Trinete, Caen)
chateaudecaen (Chateau de Caen)
chateaudefalaise (Chateau de Falaise)
dovercitatel (Dover Citadel)
evreuxcathedral (Evreux Cathedral)
fortduroule (Fort du Roule, Cherbourg)
fortmonckton (Fort Monckton, Portsmouth)
portsmouthhospital (Portsmouth Hospital)
stmereeglise (Church of Ste Mere Eglise)
stonehenge (Stonehenge)
stouenderouen (Rouen Cathedral)
winchester (Not sure what this is?  Doesn't look like the castle or other landmarks at Winchester UK)

As mentioned there is also the Pegasus Bridge.  I don't see any other non-generic bridges among the assets.

I have been compiling a userpoint database of Normandy map sights to see, as well as all airfields, in Little Navmap, which I use for other sims I fly.  This is handy for sightseeing, computing bearings and distances for cross-country flying, and generally being a more versatile map than what you can pop up in the game.  Also good for taking a look in MSFS, P3D, FSX or X-Plane if you want to do a "then and now" of the sights or airports.  Kudos to the IL2 team, BTW, for nailing the location of all of the airfields so exactly that they were almost all easy to pinpoint on a modern map, even where the fields have disappeared.  If anyone has more sights to add, I'll be following this thread with interest, and am happy to share my files for other LNM users.  I also have them for the Rheinland map and for CoD.

GamerK5083 clarified it's in fact the Antwerp cathedral, in the continent, not in the British Isles. Were you overflying Kent when you captured that screenshot Heliopause? Maybe the devs used the Antwerp cathedral (as sufggested by GamerK5083) and the cathedral in Canterbury is still pending to be modelled.

Yep, I checked that in the internet, it really looks like the building in Heliopause's screenshot. Thank you GamerK5083.

I just flew to Canterbury, though, and IL2 is using the Antwerp cathedral model for Canterbury, so Heliopause is also right.  Hopefully only temporarily.

You flew west you said? Didn't you have a few glasses of fine Scotch before taking off? indeed Antwerp is straight ahead to the opposite direction... ?

Jokes aside, thank you for your kind response, GamerK5083 confirmed the same.

Hey guys, did any of you overfly the Palace of Versailles ? If it is not modelled... what is there instead?

Theres an outline on the map tile indicating the water features (no water) I believe but nothing else. There was another post about it somewhere probably in the requeted landmarks threads

Copy-pasted from the official announcement of the Steam release, please read the part that refers to 5.002 patch, this is what it is planned:

  • A myriad of Normandy map enhancements: rivers, buildings, ports, churches, roads and railroads, airfields, harbors, cliffs etc.

(bold type is mine)

So, let's wait and see for the Canterbury Cathedral and other similar cases.

Think yourselves lucky you have one at all. When testing there was no Canterbury Cathedral! Just a minute little church up the road and facing the wrong way. I did suggest a substitute that looked more like Canterbury, i.e. no spire, but Antwerp is what they used. Better than nothing I suppose.  ?

I think we have to assume anything like this will be added much later. If ever.

This is most probably right. But Mont-Saint-Michel at least... okey I'll shut up : ))

I agree that Mt. St. Michel is really missing. So, I made my own construction with whatever stone and building material the editor gave me.

It took me a small half hour to build this. It is not as you can imagine the real one, but in fantasyland (a simulation) that feels not too bad.

Here a few snapshots, enjoy.

Thank you for such an important effort IckyAtlas but... don't you think that some players, not knowing that this is a last-resort solution, could curse the game rather than like it?

What? Dude, it's just a mod someone made in their free time.

So I gues that if the mod needs to be installed, there won't be "not knowing" people...

Thx IckyATLAS. That half an hour was worth of it. Hope someone will take an inspiration ; ) If not I would still be very happy with the game definitely and keep praising those who create it for us  : ))

That's not a Mod. I have no idea how to make mods. In fact, I have some ideas and tried once but have never been able to open the .gtp files.

Some forum members gave me advice about software to use to open those files but again it did not work.

My Mont St. Michel is a collection of ground objects and buildings that you can use to make it in the missions that you will design.

The image is taken from a test mission in the mission editor.

From far it does create the illusion, but from near if you know it you cannot be cheated, but better than nothing.

Probably it could be even better made but then it will take more time to find the right objects to improve it.

One thing you cannot do is elevating the buildings (the max elevation is due to the small hill at the end of the peninsula, and so it will always be less high than the real one.

Please check the following post for more
