You should see this in VR. I have been playing il2 for 15+ years I have never had to quit playing a game because my eyes are watering until the sun update from VR hell came out. XXXX who ever tested this and said it was ok. I wonder how many people who play VR tried the game after the update and walked away. I know I would have.

I find that having the HDR turned on makes it harder to spot and ID aircraft, plus you lose ruffly 10 FPS as well.  If your Gamma is kept at 1.0, those low flying guys and gals are more visible, too.

I'm guess that you have the G2 HMD?  I also had this blinding light experience with it when I used the HDR setting, so thought that might be your problem too.  You're right though, it's plenty bright, just like looking into the sun in fact.

on tank crew its ridiculous while driving. at times the entire viewport is plain white as if there were stage lights inside the tank. Theres a mod to reduce the brightness of the sun but im wondering if it also works on tank crew. anyone know?

TY, this did help me fix my issue somewhat. Not perfect but manageable.
