Raptorattacker Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 Nice stuff. An oft-overlooked machine is the P-39... ? 1
SR603-Flowbee Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 (edited) I knew the Russians did not like it but I just finished a book of first hand accounts by American pilots and it turns out that they didn't like it either. It was their least liked aircraft in fact with apparently no redeeming features. They did however rate the P47 very highly saying that at speed it could out turn anything when the big paddle prop blades were fitted and put to use. I had no idea. The book is called "Unsung Eagles: True Stories of America’s Citizen Airmen in the Skies of World War II". Would highly recommend. And while that may be a little off subject I much appreciate these interesting skins as a good reason to fly an oft-overlooked aircraft in our collection. Great photos as well! Raptorattacker Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 47 minutes ago, SR603-Flowbee said: I knew the Russians did not like it The Russians actually did like it. They used it differently to the Americans and British... "The USSR was the main recipient of the almost 9,600 copies of this fighter and made better use of them than the British or Americans. Contrary to false information frequently told, the Soviets did not use the P-39 Airacobra as an anti-tank attack airplane, although it was indeed capable enough as a dive bomber and ground-target strafing platform..." They tended to use it as an air-to-air weapon, utilising it's cannon effectively against the enemy. This worked because they were only supplied with the HE rounds as a pose to the alternative AP/HE rounds that the US and British employed for ground-attack. It also suited the Eastern conflict as it was largely fought at lower altitudes than others which more than suited the single supercharged Allison powerplant. 1 1
imanuthep Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 Actually, Greg from the you tube channel 'Greg's airplane and automobiles' made a great video about that same topic.... If you didn't see it, don't hesitate (as the other stuff on his channel) : a link : 1 2

CzechTexan Posted November 27, 2022 Posted November 27, 2022 It would be nice to see an Airacobra I in a green/brown camo scheme such as BX225 found in the Murmansk region: http://sk16.ru/forum/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=1439 Some time ago there was some discussion about this type of camouflage... https://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=ForumsPro&file=viewtopic&p=188759#188759 1
KOHTYP Posted November 28, 2022 Posted November 28, 2022 Interesting, it is necessary to try, it is not clear what the flight number was on the plane.
