We´re getting very close to the release of IL2BON. I´m getting more and more excited about that Normandy map.

My first go-to-place will be, of course, The White Cliffs of Dover, in a Spitfire, Vera Lynn on the speakers. ?

Which place would you suggest to visit too, what is on your bucket list when it comes to sightseeing? ?

My forebears hail from Essex before they were run off the island, so I guess I’ll start there.

Sorry, but not on the map as it is above the Thame Estuary.

My first visit will be the White Cliffs to do a victory roll in a Spitfire.  Then see if Stonehenge is on the map, its location certainly is and then to see what the cathedrals at Canterbury, Winchester and Salisbury look like followed by bombing run over my old college in Guildford if its there.

I'm going to fly over the Isle of Wight to see how accurate the rail network is.. then maybe fly up the coast to Dover (checking to see if the Shakespeare Cliffs colliery is still there enroute). That'll give a pretty good sense to me of how closely they are following the maps.

Then I'll fly over Dieppe to see if it is detailed enough to recreate operation Jubilee properly.

After that I'll just start wandering.

Guildford.  Well specifically, Bramley.  Even more specifically, the railway network that connections Guildford to Brighton via Bramley.  Grew up and currently live in that little village and it was bombed and train strafted from a Do 217; causing 8 deaths.

Link of news article for those that are interested: https://www.getsurrey.co.uk/news/nostalgia/tragic-day-75-years-ago-14164099

I've cycled the old railway line from Guildford to Brighton many times, and remember as a child cycling over the rail-way tracks before they were fully removed.  That wasnt even that long ago, 25 years or so.

Go open-top for sure. Either a Po2 or something from WW1, just so's there's time to see stuff like Isle of White and Lymington etc as I used to live down there before seeing the light and moving back up North. Then climb into a single engine fighter and do what needs to be done I think...

RNAS Lee On Solent

image.thumb.jpeg.3165a1962277da9e0b16fd853acaa2ee.jpeg

Also want to check out Portsmouth Naval Base and various other things on the Solent coast such as Lymington Harbour, New Town Creek, the Beaulieu River, Hurst Castle, the four Palmerston Forts at Spithead. And even though it's outside the proposes map area the devs showed Old Harry Rocks may be visible as it's only just outside that area and you could see the labels for nearby Studland and Swanage poking out from the image.

Also my village and local towns. Though I realise they are insignificant so won't be on there (one is labelled on the proposed map area though) but still want to check out these areas in game.

Guys, you are not gonna see your grandma's orchard in IL2. It's a phenomenal map, but set realistic expectations or you will be doing yourselves a disservice.

Nonsense. We don’t need to see granny’s orchard.

We’ll simply carpet bomb the whole area….?

Can we make map mods, to add buildings and objects? If we could, image the creativity!

Yes. Some folks have been working hard on the rheinland map to add towns in the ardennes and also in the Dutch islands. Definitely possible but I think it works with mods-on only.

I'm gonna fly a mosquito across the channel and bomb the hell out of some poor bugger in France. Or a 410 and the other way around, haven't fully decided yet.

Although the update will likely come when I don't have access to my gaming PC, so realistically the first thing I'll do is likely open up the mission editor and investigate the feasibility of the Amiens prison raid, with a bit of creative map editing.

Works with mods off as well, although you need to pack the surface files. Not a problem in SP, but there's no way to do so on MP so can only be used on private servers.

If anyone's interested, I wrote a manual a while back:

Actually, the 3d model for the Etretat cliffs is already in the game. Haven't seen any 3d model or screenshots of Mont St. Michel though, so it might be little more than a generic cathedral on a hill, whether it's in Normandy or in Brittany.

Similarly, the 3d model for Stonehenge is already available so I'm pretty sure it's on the map. Neither of those cathedrals currently have specific models though, so they're probably going to be generic cathedral models as well.

I was talking about Lower Normandy when I said that... but it's true that Brittany looks a lot like it, just pigs instead of cows...

(I wonder if some don't confuse brittany and england (in addition to translation problems)... brittany is the neighboring french region of lower normandy...)

Well, I suppose my first flight will be in a Spitfire out of Manston down the coast, just because it must be done.

If we had a Mustang 1, I'd really like to run some nuisance low level raids on German airfields in France.

I wish it was an official project and/or the tools were a bit better.

I'd probably be tempted to relay the rail network in southern England and parts of France. Adding wagon turntables and tracks to dock areas etc. There is something really enjoyable about having very unique and realistic ports to bomb etc. It'd be quite satisfying to work on map additions if it was a bit easier.

P.S. Some of the locations were really interesting but probably can't be that accurate. Ventnor for instance was pretty cool looking in terms of the track layout - but the station was essentially quarried out of the hill side so... it'd have taken a special effort even if the tech supported it... and it is accessed by a tunnel.

Btw. I take it we won't be getting any British railway locomotives or rolling stock. However, if they decided to add it I'd suggest an LBSCR D3 - since one of them took out a the Fw-190 that mortally wounded it:

The Engine that Brought Down a German Bomber – Rye's Own Magazine (ryesown.co.uk)

It also is close enough to the M7 and O2 which were pretty common at that time in the South... so it is typical enough.

I'll be heading over to Paddock Wood in Kent, as that's where my mother was from, and comparing it to the version in IL-2 Cliffs of Dover.

Mom was in her early twenties during the war, and witnessed a fair bit of the action taking place overhead. I remember her mentioning this one:

Bf 109E-4 (2803) of 9/JG51 shot down by RAF fighters during combat at 14.20.  Aircraft crashed at Skinners Corner, Mascalls, Paddock Wood, Lt F. Klotz was killed.

(from https://www.battle-of-britain.org.uk/history/battle-of-britain-september-1940-day-by-day)

I think she said they didn't dig the wreckage out until after the war.

She also mentioned the V-1's buzzing overhead in '44, and an aunt or somebody who was so traumatized by them that she had to be taken to the pub for a large morale boosting gin.

From this point on - let this thread become a list of discoveries found on the map for people to check out!

Let's see how long we can keep discovering things!

Dieppe is pretty well done - definitely worth a look - or making a campaign :)

Now that the cat is out of the bag, here is my favorite spot from my experience as a tester:

The rural areas in northern France, with their winding valleys and plateaus are something special for me. For example, the Triqueville airfield (2418) is really cool, as it is completely surrounded by a valley.

Some small towns like Hesdin (1229) are also really well done, and don't feel generic. You can tell the map makers put a lot of love compared to BOBP towns and cities for example, that feel much more standardized.

Btw. Narrow wingspan aircraft (e.g. the Sopwith triplane) can fly through the Etretat Cliff arches!
