Hi,

I have tried SteamVR and Opencomposite/OpenXR but I dont seem to get frame rates above 50 (According the the IL2 FPS counter).

I have tried various settings in game and in Nvidia drivers but dont seem to be able to increase the frame rate.

If anyone has a similar spec to mine could you tell me what typical FPS you achieve?

System Specs
Windows 11

MSI X570 Gaming Plus with latest Bios

AMD 5800X3D

32Gb Corsair memory @3600MHz

1Tb M2 drive

Gigbayte 2080 gfx card

Soundblaster Zr

You can run the SYN_VANDER IL-2 benchmark in the Hardware section to compare your peformance with other tests of the 5800X3D. Look here.

What VR device do you use?

All VR devices automaticallyt reduce the frame rate if it cannot get to the target.  For example, if I set my Index at 90hz but it could not reach it, it'd drop it to half i.e. 45fps.  If you have yours set to 100hz it may be dropping it to 50fps to maintain smooth frame rates.

It will drop the fps, not the hz.

Forgot to mention in my original post that my headset is a HP G2 v2.

I have tried all changing settings from EPIC to LOW and my FPS counter stays at around 57fps.

I have just removed the game and I am going to try a fresh install and see what I get.

Post your startup.cfg and we'll chime in -- you're running a good rig, should be pretty performant.

OK then, the G2 has a high resolution and most of GPUs (except top ones like 3080Ti and above) will constraint the game when running at 100% SteamVR SS (this is 19.5 million pixels at 90Hz).

Your CPU is not constrained for sure.

You just need to consider three things to relax your GPU and get solid 90fps:

- SteamVR %SS to 80% of less

- Avoid extreme clouds detail

- Don´t use MSAA

I use Aurus Engine to overclock my gfx card using the built in auto-tuning function. While running IL2 in VR I left the gfx card monitoring tools running and it said my graphics card was only been 25% utilised which seemed very low.

That´s is really strange. The G2 normally load the GPU quite well.

I am not good reading startup.cfg files, never used them since I don´t know the exact meaning or equivalence of all their parameters.

All can I help is to give you this post and try to run the Passmark benchmarks and IL-2 benchmarks.

This on a 2080 is not going to work without motion reprojection and probably balanced preset. Opt for using either FSR or NIS upscaling.

I suposse these are the vertical and horizontal pixels per eye to be rendered. This sum 19.5 million pixels which is default resolution of the G2 (100% SS in SteamVR). I assume they can be modified (to a lower value like 80% or less) in SteamVR %SS and the file is updated.

The strange thing is that he say that the load of GPU is just 25% in play game.

With a 2080 and those settings (ultra preset, 4x  FXAA and medium shadows & clouds) a more realistic ballpark is around 65-70% if you don't want to use reprojection. At least that used to be my experience with a 2080 and a 5900x before upscalers were available for VR.

But again, nowadays that's best done with an upscaling method like FSR with its own sharpening algorithm.

I've found that cranking the desktop screen resolution all the way down seems to be counterproductive in that it tricks the render pipeline into thinking everything is super low res and the GPU doesn't need to do any heavy lifting.

I find I get far better performance in VR by leaving the desktop resolution in game to native settings(2560x1440 in my case) or slightly lower,  maybe 1080p.

I have a 3070ti, i9-9900kf, and 32gb of ram with a Valve index and I see GPU utilization as low as 15% when desktop resolution is set to 720p. Not that it's ever really high, but keeping desktop at 1080 or 1440, I see maybe 40-60% utilization in vr. Most flight sims are always going to be CPU bound, but IL2 seems particularly bad about it.
