1440p spotting

Hi all,

New GPU arrived today (XFX RX 6800XT), so I hope to be able to get flying again after my daughter starts kindergarten in a few weeks.  In the meantime I'm looking for recommendations for spotting in 1440p.  I've been reading that it's actually better to downscale to 1080p, is that still the case?

Not having flown in more than a year, I suspect with the changes to clouds and rendering and whatnot, that the "best practices" for spotting contacts in multiplayer have changed.

Anyone got a link, or some recommendations, for spotting in the newest version of the game?

As a primarily VR user used to VR spotting, the few times I've messed about in 1440p I had zero complaints about spotting on flatscreen. in theory downscaling should improve spotting (bigger pixels) but in practice I think I'd rather have the increased clarity of 1440, for both better visuals and better ID'ing aircraft.

As far as "best practice" graphics settings I can only speak from my own experience, I found with the new clouds and visuals I get a much better image using HDR: Off and Gamma: 1.2 than I did pre-lighting/cloud update with HDR: on and Gamma at .9. That however is with my VR headset and YMMV. Experiment around and see what works best with your system (make sure to try lots of different times of day and seasons, especially snowy maps.)

I run 1440p and I used to play on 1080p on my 1440p monitor since it helped with spotting. I made the switch and tuned my settings and can now spot imo just as good as any of my squad mates with 1080p. 1440p will make the targets look smaller but more defined which will help with ID.

It is more a matter of setting up your graphics settings and screen settings.
If you're screen is capable it should have lots of options. Two that I use extensively is contrast, R/G/B and sharpness. I've also turned up digital vibrance in my NVIDIA controlpanel (idk the AMD equivalent).

In game I have the settings turned pretty much way down to keep FPS capped at 144hz and to spot planes easier. If you are interested I can send you my settings in DMs and explain anything that needs explaining there.

Interesting.  I've been playing with gamma 0.6, set via config file, as I recall.

For me the hardest part is always spotting aircraft against the ground when there's no snow.  Obviously this is probably historically accurate since many aircraft are painted in camouflage for a reason, but I watch videos and it seems like people can see things I can't.

Be careful with Monitors or TVs that use VA-Panels. The problem is always with VA that darker pixel will look too dark you can't spot planes in darker pixel area.

The only way to fix this is to stay away from VA or to use black equalizer.

I've migrated from 1080p to 1440p last year and honestly, my spotting didn't became an issue. To be honest, I didn't notice any difference.

You might want to get used to your new screen, but don't reduce the resolution for the sake of "viewing" better. I am sure that's not a real issue now.

As Livai said, I hope you got a good screen, so enjoy your new higher resolution!

You can change the Screen Resolution to this

  • 2400x1440p

I prefer the 1,666666666666667 ratio, because everything looks still fine and planes appear little more wide helps to spot them a lot and add some FPS for free.
