"Return to Base" Acknowledgement

I'm currently flying a PWCG campaign in late 1944 with I./JG27 over the Rheinland/Bodeplatte map on Bf 109 G-14s/K-4s.

I've noticed that, while the flight acknowledges most commands over the radio, it does not seem to do so for Return to Base.

Am I doing something wrong, or is this simply programmed that way?

Small point, I appreciate, but I'd like to know that when I order my flight to bug out, it's going to do so ASAP, because, let's face it, you need that command to work at this stage of the war in the West!

Just tried in advanced quick missions.  Going through the menu the F7 key does not seem to do anything.  Using the shortcut LAlt +0 seems to send them home before engaged and may work after engaged.  If that doesn't work, try using the do like me command.

The RTB command seems to be at least partially copied straight from RoF. Hence the white flare, which was already outdated in WW2 (although flares were occasionally still used, that's why many of the aircraft have a flare port).

If you see a white flare being launched by your plane, then that's the acknowledgement the command was successfully given.

This doesn't mean that this gives a 100% guarantee that your flight ignores everything else and returns straight home.  Mission scripting *may* be able to override a player-issued RTB command (not sure about that, but I think it can), and the AI may choose to defend itself if an enemy gets too close (which is realistic).

Thanks, guys.

Yes, the RTB commad does seem to work, both pre- and post-engagement (at least in some circumstances).

However, it does seem strange that it's one of the few commands (the only one?) that doesn't receive any formal acknowledgement over the radio.

Seems that that's the way it is and not something I'm doing wrong, which is what I was hoping to work out.

Thanks again for your replies.

Haven't spotted a white flare, AEthelraed, unlike in FC, when it's a nice, clear indication that the RTB command has been issued.

Well, there should be one. But it can be a bit hard to spot at times; with the much higher speeds of ww2, air friction causes the flare to disappear from view extremely quickly.

Will check, ta, but still seems odd not to have a radio acknowledgement of RTB command in a late WW2 fighter.

IIRC all the other commands receive radio verfiication from the flight.

As I said, not a big deal - just seems to be an oversight.
