Flying escort in a P-51, hey, life is grand.

But I have to ask, why do the American bombers start playing musical chairs on the way to the target? It's like herding cats. I'm curious.

What do you mean? Which behaviour do they show?

It also helps to post the mission. You can't explain the AI's actions without knowing what they were ordered to do by the mission logic.

About midway to the target, the bombers break formation. It seems as if they are rearranging their formation. One has planes scattered from here to there, strung out all over the place. After that they go to the target and drop their bombs on target.

If it's a glitch, it's a glitch. If it something they really did, I was just curious about it.

It happens quite often on Bodeplatte, battle of the bulge or shortly thereafter. Knowing what the mission logic ordered them to do is obviously beyond me.

Well, that's why it's so helpful (even required by the Devs) to post the mission file, so that people who do know how the mission logic works can see if there's anything that caused that behaviour. :)

For auto-generated missions (career and (A)QMG), you'll find the latest mission in the data folder as _gen.msnbin.

Seeing as how this thread ended up in this forum, it must be a glitch of some kind. I'm fine with that. I was just curious if that is the way it really happened back then, what was going on. No harm, no foul. ?
