Bando Posted August 4, 2022 Posted August 4, 2022 I recently upgraded my PC. I have a Ryzen 7 5800X3D with 32Gb Ram and a 3080Ti GPU. I have been loosely following the threads in this forum, but I wonder what VR device I should purchase for this PC. There are so many possibilities. I thought (after reading some other forums) that the Pimax 8k would do the trick. Then I read a lot of (ex) users of the thing commenting they'd never buy anything from Pimax again. The pro's and cons of each and every device are scaring me off. I'd like to hear some advice from you guys, for I will use it for flightsims only and I have the impression there are some very knowledgeable people here. Around 1500 Euro is the budget.
76SQN-Minimayhemtemp Posted August 4, 2022 Posted August 4, 2022 Quest 2 imho. Reason being that its decent and low priced, so if you dont get along with VR its not too much of an investment. Quite a few people will setup the headset and not get along with it for various reasons, so I dont think sinking a load of cash into the setup makes sense until you know you are comitted to it. I've had my Quest 2 for about a year and a half now, and only play IL2 with it. Will upgrade at some point in the future, but am in no rush at all as the Q2 a good headset to use!
chiliwili69 Posted August 4, 2022 Posted August 4, 2022 If I would buy one device today it will be Index, despite it was released 3 years ago. My view: Obiously the G2 (v2) is a very good option as well. In october it will most likely released the new Quest Pro (Cambria) for about 1500€ (not official news or price yet). 1 1

Very similar system here. I do only flight sims: GB and DCS. I have CoD Blitz and DW-T but don't use because no VR yet, though also for other reasons that will still be consequential after their VR launches. I have used an Index for several years now. I am up to three base stations though one is adequate to get started. I tried WMR with both flavors of Odyssey and despise it. I don't do MP and find I have no difficulty recognizing boggies in SP. Works great also with Alyx of course but my play area is too small to get enthusiastic with flinging things about while in the HMD ? Edited August 5, 2022 by Dagwoodyt 1
Bando Posted August 9, 2022 Author Posted August 9, 2022 I think it will be the Reverb G2 for me. If I order it I will have to install steam + steamVR. Anything else to install? Are there simple ways to not have steam involved (steam is not a problem, just seeing if there are other options). In Holland I'd have to pay €650 for the G2 and it has controllers with it. Is it correct I do not need any other tracking devices? The cameras in the device will suffice? Hoping for some answers.

While you will need Steam to install Steam VR, afterwards no need to launch Steam as you can launch Steam VR independently of Steam. Edited August 9, 2022 by dburne 1

With your 3080Ti you will enjoy a good level of supersampling. You don´t need any other controllers or tracking devices. For IL-2 you will not need the controllers but the G2 includes them in the box. The cameras of the device do the 6DOF inside-out tracking, but be sure to have some light on to allow the cameras to do the tracking. 1
dburne Posted August 13, 2022 Posted August 13, 2022 (edited) Reverb G2 is not going to need any super sampling, iirc it's native resolution is already pretty high. If you can run it at native you will be very pleased. For flight sims Reverb G2 truly offers best bang for the buck currently. I guess some would consider the Quest 2 in that same category but I don't really put them in my consideration. I admit to a bias there, just don't care much for Meta. Reverb G2 is one helluva headset though imho. I would add I have had Rift CV1, Rift S, Quest, Index, Reverb G2, Vive Pro 2, and now Aero. Edited August 13, 2022 by dburne 1
dgiatr Posted August 14, 2022 Posted August 14, 2022 Go get G2 for sure, i started VR with Q2 and now i play only with G2. Changing to opencomposite plus openxr toolkit also did the trick for me about clarity. I stopped changing my settings all the time since then.
56RAF_Roke Posted August 14, 2022 Posted August 14, 2022 (edited) The G2 is really, really good. Noticeably better visual quality than the Quest 2 I upgraded from, and can strike a fine balance between distant spotting and contact ID-ing. Plays well with VR Necksafer too. Just to clarify my previous comment. When I said a good level I was thinking on 80%, 90% or even 100%. The G2 (due to lenses design and geometry) has internally an inherent supersampling. Look the tab "SS per Device" at the "Absolute SS ratio" in this spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gJmnz_nVxI6_dG_UYNCCpZVK2-f8NBy-y1gia77Hu_k The physical panel is 2x2160x2160=9.3 million pixels, and at 100%SS the rendered pixels are 2x3162x3093=19.5 million pixels. it is a 19.5/9.3=2.1 absolute SS ratio. And every VR device has an absolute SS ratio.
