Aircraft Model Updates in Campaign

Quick question, as time progresses and additional model upgrades become available, does PWCG automatically replace unit aircraft for the newer version, or does it have to be manually requested?

Yes, as time progresses you do get newer models of planes and/or even other models, but you will only be able to fly them if you have the appropriate module bought (Battle of Stalingrad, Battle of Moscow, etc.)

I do understand that, maybe I was a little unclear. I’ll use my current campaign as an example. Playing 109 from the earliest, the G2 has now come available as time has moved enough. Does the squadron automatically receive them in inventory to use, or do I have to use the Equipment Request option to introduce the newer planes

It will automatically receive them into inventory.

You can pick up newer models from the plane list.  It's still possible that you are assigned to fly older model by default, however there might be couple new aircraft in the hangar time to time
