Gryphon_VR Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 (edited) I'm returning to VR with a Reverb G2v2 having returned a Rift S months ago. First time around I noted that the VR domain is pretty complex in terms of what apps you need to run in addition to the headset and game. I started with IL2 using SteamVR to drive my Rift S, then - as performance wasn't great - I switched to OpenComposite. However, I never really understood what SteamVR or OpenComposite was, I just ran them. So this time around I decided to figure out what the software stack is and understand the alternatives. In so doing I found this excellent article by Fred Emmott which I think will be of interest to most of our VR community (especially the engineers among us). I particularly like Fred's overview diagram of the variety of possible software stacks so I've included it below. As a result, I'm going to pass on Steam from the get-go and when the G2 arrives tomorrow I'll go straight in using the OpenComposite route. I hope this thread will serve as a placeholder for discussion on how the software stack differs for different headsets and choice of API. Edited July 19, 2022 by Gryphon962 1 2
