cardboard_killer Posted June 22, 2022 Posted June 22, 2022 (edited) [80 years ago today] "• A squadron of JG 2 Focke-Wulf 190 fighters is scrambled to intercept a force of twelve RAF Bostons on their way back from a bombing mission. A fight develops over the English Channel with the escorting Spitfires, during which Oberleutnant Armin Faber is attacked by Sergeant Trejtnar of 310 (Czech) Squadron. In his efforts to shake off the Spitfire, Faber flies north over Exeter. After much high-speed maneuvering, Faber pulls an Immelmann turn into the sun and shoots down his pursuer in a head-on attack. - Trejnar bails out safely, but the disorientated Faber now mistakes the Bristol Channel for the English Channel, flies north instead of south, and lands at RAF Pembrey in Wales. The astonished pilot is immediately captured along with his Fw-190A-3. - The British had been considering a commando mission just to capture one of the new German fighters for evaluation, but Faber saved them the effort. - The prize is repainted in RAF colours and evaluated by Royal Aircraft Establishment Farnborough, then the Air Fighting Development Unit at Duxford, and finally No. 1426 (Enemy Aircraft) Flight RAF back at Farnborough, providing the Allies with valuable intelligence. It will influence the development of the Hawker Tempest and Hawker Fury as well as bomber defensive doctrine. Faber will spend the rest of the war as a PoW in Canada."
