Game overriding my monitors refresh rate

Hello.

I have an 144hz monitor which i have turned down the refresh rate in Nvidia control panel to 120hz.

I tried the NVCP preferred refresh rate set to use application and highest available but the game still runs at 144hz I have a setting on my monitor which shows the monitors refresh rate and i have set it at 120hz in Nvidia CP. My monitor will display a refresh rate of 120hz on desktop and in games, except this one, the refresh rate will show 144hz no matter what setting i use. When i exit the game the monitor reverts back to my setting of 120hz. It appears the game is overriding my refresh rate setting. i want it to run at 120hz so i can have a smooth experience with vsync working properly with 120hz refrsh rate. Yes, i could use vsync at 144hz but i would have to turn my graphic settings down.
