After playing war thunder for a few years I decided to try the il2 series.  i already have flown around for like 10 mins in a yak 1 but im honestly very overwhelmed about the different planes/ what makes them different from each other. could any of you guys just give me a few pointers on what i should look for so I can choose which ones best for me?

Similar to you, most people have their own personal take on the whole thing. The best advice I could give is just keep at it and feel your way into the (quite considerable) array of planes and tanks etc.

The Yak is as good a place as any to start though, I'll give you that.

Try watching some of Requiem's 'How To Fly The...' guides which are VERY useful and informative, together with any other guides on YouTube from various other members of the Community. You can never learn enough!

@supmydudes, have a look under "Aircraft and Vehicle Guides" in the IL-2 Sturmovik Resources post. If you like fighters, the "Air Combat Guides" section of the post is useful and if your more interested in bombers or other ground attackers, look at the "Ground Attack Guides" section.

The aircraft you are looking for is the German 109F-4.

Fast, flies like a dream - she's fully automatic and has a centrally mounted elephant gun.

Short answer, all of them.  And it's OK to fly them like you stole them.

What the man says, try them out, have fun.. that's it :)

I like the Yak models through out the game, even the LaGG 3. The 109ers are classic birds to fly and learn. Landing is a bit bumpy

First of all, I want to congratulate you to the best choice you’ve ever made in your flight summing career!
It’s really up to you. Flay what you’re interested in. What I did in the beginning was start playing around in SP with the simple difficulty. You get some help from the game so you don’t kill your engine or forget to use radiator cause the game will do it. You can play on MP server with easy settings when you got used to flying and shooting in the game and then you can try out the expert settings und SP and MP and learn the different planes. What things need to be controlled, what’s automated etc.

As others have said, at that point the 109s are great, lots of automation.
The specifications tab is your friend when it comes to learning new planes. It lists performance data, engine limitations and things about automation and controls that are available on planes, like the boost for Fw 190s that have it, or the turbocharger control for the P-47.

You can find it by opening the map, on the top right of the screen

Hipe that helps

Try the il2, do some ground atack, and if you can, make a ingame recording of what you did, watch it, and why/how you missed.

The il2 is a good, sturdy plane, good enough  to get a "feeling" of the flying and physics, easy to take of and surdy enough to survive bad landings.

Ju-87 is slow and vulnerable, but easy to fly - it is definitely a good starting point for learning how to practice flying. One can also dive bomb with it (which is interesting).

I'd practice with it. Eventually try seeing how sharply you can turn without spinning the plane. How sharply you can turn differs on different airspeeds. Also make sure you have a joystick (it will make controlling the aircraft easier) and use normal difficulty at first so you don't have to worry about engine management!

The other aircraft:

Il-2 is an armoured ground attack aircraft - it is heavy and takes some practices to fly. One has to watch one's airspeed (i.e. don't turn for too long, and give it some time periodically to regain speed and/or climb). But it is a good plane.

Pe-2 is a fast bomber, harder to take-off and land. It can dive-bomb if necessary.

He-111 is an easier bomber to fly but slower and more vulnerable.

LaGG-3 and Yak-1 are light fighters should be relatively easy to learn, but are a bit too responsive for some and have a limited ammo supply to keep weight down. The LaGG has more armament options but the Yak-1 is a bit higher performance at most altitudes.

The bf-109 is a German fighter that is heavier on the controls - the F version is nicer to fly the G version is faster. Both can't turn as sharply as the Russian fighters, but can beat them through fighting vertically at some altitudes and/or using speed.

If you have the premium edition you'll have two more fighters... with their own eccentricities - but if you don't have it I'll stop here. Let us know if you are curious about the planes in one of the other modules and thinking about getting it on sale. It'd be more overwhelming - but you do get things like bullet-proof glass in some of the slightly later aircraft ?

If your playing multiplayer go on the finnish servers website and look at the planes with the best stats and fly those

Process of narrowing it down.

Fighter, bomber or attack?

Allied or axis?

More automated (Axis) or more manual (Allied, especially Russian)?

Timer period.

Answering those questions should narrow the options down to a few planes.

Buy the U2/Po2 and fly that.
