Jason_Williams Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 Quote 320 Dear Pilots, Today’s DD takes a look at our cliff models for the Normandy Map. Making realistic looking cliff faces in a flight-simulator is always tough. Whenever you make a map with the English Channel this becomes necessary. Many other development teams have had to craft them over the years and we are no exception. We had our first crack at them when we made our Channel Map for Rise of Flight about 10 years ago. We’ve gotten better at making them and below you can see some work-in-progress images of how they currently look in IL-2 Great Battles. Work on the Normandy map continues and it is really starting to take shape. The map will be released later this summer. However, the next update is already in Beta and it will include the Arado AR-234 jet bomber. What an interesting and challenging aircraft to model. She’s pretty complex. And the AI B-26 will also be I the next update. Full Text and Visuals HERE. Jason 26 1 7
dannytherat Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 Great stuff! Really looking forward to the Channel map! Ar-234 and AI B-26 coming soon too! Brilliant ?

Voyager Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 Any idea when the skin templates usually come out for new planes?
tattywelshie Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 Bloody marvellous. Great work on the cliffs, they look good, can’t wait to fly the Arado, the planes you guys are knocking out at the for Normandy are amazing, having so much fun in them.
Bando Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 Great to see them cliffs. You guys keep rocking up great content. Thumbs up!!
RNAS10_Mitchell Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 Looks fantastic. Really applaud the team for making that look so great. Can you share any news on drop tank progress?
Feldgrun Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 And the AI B-26 will also be I the next update. The AI B-26 will also be "in" the next update, with the Arado?
AEthelraedUnraed Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 The cliffs look really nice! However, I don't see the beautiful rolling shore wave effects that were created for the Kuban coast. Are there any plans for these to be added to the Normandy map (and perhaps the Rheinland map as well)? 4
150_GIAP-Red_Dragon Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 (edited) These are the best cliffs I've ever seen in combat flight simulators Edited June 10, 2022 by -332FG-Red_Pilot 1
ITAF_Rani Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 (edited) Beautifull ...good job ? Edited June 10, 2022 by ITAF_Rani
Guster Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 Gotten better, huh? I think the cliffs look beautiful! Nice work!
[CPT]Crunch Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 Might have to actually set up controls for tanks, and run a Tiger over the cliff. 2
Knightmare Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 The cliffs are looking incredible. The only negative feedback is the lack of distant reflection on the water is pretty obvious. I'm hoping the water shaders will get an overall some day. 1 4
BiggusDickus Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 Great news (about the Ar-234 & B-26). Any time line estimates for the final pieces of the BON puzzle, i.e. Me-410? (and the V-1 doddle bug) Gotta admit; I'm very enthusiastic about saddling up in a Me-410 for some reason (maybe it's being able to control the dual 13mm remote control defensive guns attached at mid fuselage)
Falcon41 Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 Jason, Fantastic, I'm always amazed at the quality of work your team puts into this sim. KUDOS
Tromplamort-Dser Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 Grenat work on the cliffs. Do you plan to add landmarks such as the needle of Etretat and the pointe du Hoc? 2

I think Pointe du Hoc is shown in pic 7: Quote Given that The Needles are shown in one of the other pics, I'm hopeful the Needle of Étretat will be there as well
616Sqn_Johnny-Red Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 Will they have collision and a realistic friction values on their horizontal surfaces?
BigMotor Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 I like all the shading and 3D effect in the cliffs, good work. 1
Raptorattacker Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 Well, I used to live down there on the South Coast for a few years and I can quite honestly say that they look great, absolutely great. Did I see the Needles on the Isle of Wight in the one shot? I lived on the mainland right in from there so it'll be entertaining buzzing a few old friends!! 1
pasao Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 Good afternoon Errrrr how to say it: Esto esta de la ostia!!!!!! Sorry for the spanish expression but there are no other words to describe it impressive Thank you a lot team!!!!
Talisman Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 Looking very, very nice indeed! Many thanks for the update and all of the good works from the development team. Very much appreciated. Happy landings, Talisman
Rjel Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 Impressive looking cliffs. My first exposure to the them was in the movie The War Lover when Steve McQueen tried to coax his ailing B-17 over the top, with unfavorable results. Pretty haunting when I was a kid. The Normandy map is shaping up nicely.
JG1_Daze Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 I think I read that after Normandy you'll finish FC career mode, is that right? 1
Vortice Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 Why are there trees on the beach in several locations? I have never seen such a thing in real life. 1
Avimimus Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 Really nice improvements in the underlying tech there! Also, mention of the Channel map really makes me want an FCIV (although it might make more sense to do the floatplanes as part of FCIII - as that'd allow more of a 1917 focus, and let a hypothetical FCIV flesh out the 1916 plane set a bit)! 1
Ouky1991 Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 Any plans for improving water rendering before this map is out? Looks great otherwise! 3
pilotpierre Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 (edited) Gooking lood as always. Kudos plus team. What chance some of the new (sinkable) ships or boats being snuck into another map prior to BoN release? Edited June 10, 2022 by pilotpierre
firdimigdi Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 Ooh that is indeed pretty. I think the 11th pic is my fav of the bunch, always loved how IL-2 renders coastlines. 4 hours ago, Jason_Williams said: And the AI B-26 will also be I the next update Awesome, can't wait to see them in missions. Speaking of AI-controlled planes and since thing are ramping up for a map that will require many active units is it possible that this issue that crept in sometime early this year/late last year might be addressed? It is clearly an AI-related problem which has rendered scripted campaigns rather unplayable - at least for VR, no idea if it also affects high refresh rate monitors as well - and persists regardless of graphical settings or system configuration.
AKA_Ramstein Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 Fromt he times I saw the North Atlantic water, the Channel Water, etc.. it was cold dark and uninviting... yet the pictures look more like a warm blueish inviting water... 1
