Hello my name is John. I have il2 sturmovik for years now I bought the CD poped into my computer and  really haven't stopped playing since    I have most of the DLCs and a few planes All was good I even got the trackir 5 even better. But last year I finally got a VR headset   yes the quest 2 and stupid me though all I had to do was plug it in and away you go    but of course NO   .so then I went down the rabbit hole of link cable/ virtual desktop/ opencomposite/ steamvr/oculus tray tool and oculus debug tool.  Learnt all the tricks delete this install that and so on it never ends   Now at this stage I can play the sim no probs  the cockpit instruments are fine the cockpit is fine     outside is ok aswell even when I have settings on high/ by the way the graphics card i have is a 1070 8gb overclocked vr ready/ and my computer has 32 gb memory.  So I can fly the sim and things are ok   until I get another plane passing by then it all goes belly up. This goisting starts and its terrible ?  Have seen a lot of posts here on the subject  but has anyone here with a 1070 8gb and  the quest got it to run as good as it can get with just a setup. And if so could you please help me     even a few screenshots of your setup more be much appreciated                 sorry for the long post   I tried to get to the point as quickly as I could     ?      yours hopefully john

There are three different games in the "IL-2 Sturmovik" series of combat flight simulators... and they really are three different games sharing the same basic name:

1) The first game in the series was released in 2001 simply as "IL-2 Sturmovik" but since the 2006 compendium it has definitely acquired the name IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946

2) The second game in the series is IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover, released in 2011, but since 2017 you'll need to run the version which is named IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover - Blitz

3) The third game in the series was a pair of modules released in 2013 and 2016 respectively, but since 2017 all the modules in this third IL-2 game are identified as the Great Battles series, thus the third IL-2 is titled IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battles.

As per the visible badges under your avatar I see you do possess two modules in the Great Battles series (the third game), you own "Flying Circus Vol. 1" and "Tank Crew".

For now, the third game is the only one that is VR-compatible, thus you shouldn't encounter serious problems when running "Flying Circus Vol. 1" and "Tank Crew" with your Quest 2.

The two first games in the series (1946 and Dover) are not VR-compatible and it is normal you fail when you try to run them with your VR headset.

If you possess modules in the second generation ("Cliffs of Dover - Blitz" and/or "Desert Wings - Tobruk"), don't give up: the Dover series developers are contributing with their effforts so that VR is compatible with the game.

Dealing with the oldest IL-2 game, "IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946", it is very doubtful that we see a VR-compatible version of it in the future.

I bought the CD

Forget CDs and DVDs. Only the first generation of IL-2 games was traded in the physical format and even in the present day fans of the 1946 game use dowloadable basic software when reinstalling the game. A digital copy of 1946 costs soemthing like 8 US bucks, and provides a better install because old CDs and DVS may present problems with Windows 10 and Windows 11.

To be more accurate, let's put it that way:

a) In the "Great Battles" series, there aren't add-ons... there are modules (every product is a standalone game).

b) In the "Dover" series, there aren't modules... there is a basic game plus its subsequent add-ons (you need the basic game if you want to run the add-ons in your computer).

"IL-2 Sturmovik: Desert Wings - Tobruk" is an add-on for the basic game "IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover - Blitz". Do you possess that latter?

At any rate, none of the products in the "Dover" series is VR-compatible... not yet.

"Tank Crew" and "Flying Circus" do not work with the same software as "Desert Wings - Tobruk" because they do belong to a completely different game which is "IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battles".

Again: the "1946" series, the "Dover" series and the "Great Battles" series are three different games sharing the same brand "IL-2 Sturmovik"... but, however, they are three different games.

By the way... the complete and correct title is "IL-2 Sturmovik: Desert Wings - Tobruk".

"IL-2 Sturmovik: Desert Wings - Tobruk" is an add-on for the basic game "IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover - Blitz". Both form the "Dover" series, whith a third title in the works (but the developers haven't unveiled that title yet). Do you possess the game "IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover - Blitz" ? You'll need it if you want to run "Desert Wings - Tobruk".

Thank you, that's clearer.

Now, please, remember:

a) "IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946"... no VR and few chances to get it in.

b) "IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover - Blitz"... no VR yet but the development teams are working on it.

c) "IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battles"... VR fully operational.

At the moment, for the two first games in the IL-2 series, your TrackIR is fine. For taking advantage of your headset when playing "Flying Circus" or "Tank Crew", do not hesitate to go to the "Great Battles" forum (check the tabs on the top of the page). Here you are in the "Dover" series forum.

Hello scranscranny

If you want to play IL-2 STURMOVIK - DESERT WINGS - TOBRUK, you need the base game IL-2 STURMOVIK - CLIFFS OF DOVER - BLITZ.

It is the same as you need IL-2 STURMOVIK - BATTLE OF STALINGRAD to play any of the other GREAT BATTLES games.

BLITZ is only $10 USD... and you can find it at less on bargain sites.

BLITZ and TOBRUK are a different series than GREAT BATTLES... different game engine, with clickable cockpits, more sophisticated damage model, and other differences.  That is made clear on STEAM and the IL-2 site.

TF is not in charge of refunds from sales from the IL-2 site, you need to talk to them about that... if you bought the game from STEAM, you could get a refund.

You can use VR headsets in BLITZ and TOBRUK if you install the VR Beta, which you would need to contact me about.  (send me a message)

I'd suggest you spend the extra $10 bucks for BLITZ and check out the game... maybe you'll like it.  ?
