totalize Posted June 7, 2022 Posted June 7, 2022 Why is the Normandy campaign taking so long to release. Like it was announced back in 2019 I believe. What's the hold up?

What's the hold up? Rome wasn't built in a day! Battle of Normandy is expected to release in the coming months, probably during the Summer, but delays can always happen. Expect the Career to be the last thing added, and in the meantime we will be able to enjoy two new flyable aircraft (Arado and Me 410) and the map if things go well! Kind regards and patience! 1 2
dannytherat Posted June 7, 2022 Posted June 7, 2022 It's taking about the same amount of time as any of the campaigns have taken. It's a huge undertaking, the Normandy map is (I believe) the biggest yet, and the multiple twin engined aircraft we're getting are complicated and time consuming to produce to the very high standard to which we've become accustomed. Also the ongoing world situation has not helped anything. We've got lots of really great content already available from the Normandy module, and lots more should be here in the not too distant future. I know waiting can be difficult, but I'm sure it'll be worth it! ? 1

What's the hold up? Most IL-2 Great Battles titles have taken about 2.5 years to complete. Normandy is going to run a little over but then it's a slightly more ambitious project with some extra content (B-26 AI, V-1 plus launch site, more ships than usual, etc.). So it's more or less on schedule. Also.... have you seen the world for the last 2-years? Unfortunately that affects the devs as much as the rest of us. 3

I don’t know… did anything happen the last two years that could affect a team working closely together in an office environment? Also does BoN include a higher than average number of twin engine a/c with high development effort and a truly gigantic map? 3
Jason_Williams Posted June 8, 2022 Posted June 8, 2022 Gee I don't know, a pandemic and lockdowns and a war we didn't ask for. Things are looking pretty good in most areas. We always have unwanted slowdowns, but Normandy was our most ambitious project to date. Jason 13 4 1 11

People do complain about the lack of villages, but Sicily/Italy can't be worse than Rheinland. Regarding your 109 paralipsis, unless IL2 goes Pacific, I don't think there's any place you won't get a 109 or 190. At least in Italy there's the possibility to include some pretty stylish Italian planes.

Just search youtube for biggest AAA games how they were made. If you kept track of games news in 2020/2021 an enormous number of titles were delayed, usually by several months, often up to a year. Many of these were by big studios with hundreds of people, Il-2 is done by a small team where any single unexpected illnesses could knock out half the people working on a given feature You can build a lot of great software at home but you can't rebuild how a team operates at short notice and not expect issues. Also consider that museums, archives, etc that are necessary for research (and sometimes overseas, remember when international travel was banned pretty much globally?) would've shut down completely for visitors 1 3

We went entirely remote and managed to do so with minimal loss of productivity. We were fortunate. Two years prior we had started the process if implementing better processes. Automated tests required, code reviews, higher standards of code quality, pair and mob programming, etc. We had also shifted from a culture of individual ownership to team ownership. Finally, we had shifted from multi tasking to priority based focus - i.e. stop trying to do everything at once and focus on the most important thing. Team ownership and priority based focus go very much hand in hand. All of these changes were based on improving outcomes, obviously with no thought of the pandemic. When the pandemic hit we had the processes in place and executed them remotely. People still had to write tests, do code reviews, talk to each other, focus on the task at hand, etc. With the culture in place it was just a matter of how and not what. We already had about 1/4 of the staff working remotely, so use of communications tools (Slack, Teams, whatever) was already a common practice. It really didn't hit us very hard. What I find damaging to a software team's productivity is a management insistence on individual responsibility. Management just can't seem to get past "holding individuals accountable". What that does is it makes individuals focus on "their" work and not on what is best for the organization. It was much more about changing management than changing the developers. So there's my little diatribe on effective workplace organization - but really, changing culture did matter. I am not making any criticism of 1C. I have no insights at all into how 1C is run, its strong points or its weak points. Just pointing out the transitions that allowed us to move forward with minimal disruption. 1
