Enceladus828 Posted June 4, 2022 Posted June 4, 2022 (edited) I really like a lot of scenes in the 2019 movie but agree that some scenes like the bombings of the Akagi and the Hiryu were quite Hollywood. There were omissions of the B-17s, Wildcats, F2As and the B-26s attacked at low altitude, not at high altitude. Overall, both movies are good. Edited June 4, 2022 by Enceladus typo
Gambit21 Posted June 4, 2022 Posted June 4, 2022 2019 movie was silly for the most part. The only thing it had over the original was tech, and the tech was abused.….and yeah WTF no Wildcats. ? 1
Missionbug Posted June 4, 2022 Posted June 4, 2022 I was really surprised to find that I actually did like the 2019 version, some of the action stuff seemed over the top but then how do you successfully reenact such a pivotal moment in time in a movie? These days I try and take my air enthusiasts head off and just try and get into the story that the director has provided, all the aircraft stuff will by necessity be full of compromises historically and otherwise. Take care and be safe. Wishing you all the very best, Pete.
Vig Posted June 4, 2022 Posted June 4, 2022 I generally don't like any movies of this genre because the errors grate and the grafted-on love stories are cloying. Tora! Tora! Tora! is an exception. 3
DBFlyguy Posted June 5, 2022 Posted June 5, 2022 The original Midway is a pretty piss poor production honestly... it used a ton of re-hashed footage from "Tora Tora Tora" and stock war footage that didn't really fit (there are several clips of F6F Hellcats and F4U Corsairs in the movie...)while the newer one used way too much CGI... I do like the newer version better since it dives more into the actual battle than the 1976 version. Neither movie is as good as something like "Battle of Britain" which was older than both movies or even "Pearl Harbor" (crappy love triangle story aside). 1
