Saw it the other night as well. I though it was well-done, and the attention to detail with small things like S-turns during taxiing was a nice little bonus. ??

Shocker as well: my wife was the one who brought up the question of why the wings on the Corsair were "bent like that", so I was able to explain that while not having a totally airplane nerd moment. ?

Not really a spoiler when it's a historical event anyone can look up online. We're not talking about a fictional story here. ?

I once had an Ex get really mad at me for "spoiling" Death of Stalin by mentioning Khrushchev leading the USSR. Wasn't the reason I broke up with her, but it certainly didn't help her case...

Anyways, watched this the other night and really enjoyed it, lots of great Corsair and Bearcat footage! Need to pickup the book for sure.

Despite some reservations, plus my attitude towards political correctness and all the rest of it, I watched the film on Prime.

I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. Corsairs, Bearcats, Skyraiders, great to see them!

As to the racial aspect, I didn't think it was too overdone and it didn't overshadow the rest of the film. It was of course all in context.

Even though I knew what the outcome was going to be as I already knew the history, that didn't stop my enjoyment.

All in all, very well done and worth watching... :good:

There is a massive difference between being "politically correct" and just telling it like it was.  They could've went into all the racist crap he had to go through to make it to the fleet and that would've been perfectly fine and historically accurate but the movie primarily focused on the friendship between Jesse and Tom which is the primary focus of the book and not Jesse Brown as a man who literally made history.  I was fine with that decision and enjoyed the movie but I do feel like the director may have been a bit too concerned with not making anyone feel uncomfortable with the history.  I'd make the same commentary on "Red Tails" ... but that movie had a lot more issues than just "playing it safe"....

A book more fully focused on Jesse Brown is "The Flight of Jesse Leroy Brown":

I also liked the movie.

About the racism part, the only thing that kind of made me wonder was the credibility of the part, where Jesse Brown was not allowed to enter to a club in France. I would think that a man in an American officer uniform, part of a group of other American officers, soon after WWII Victory in France, would not get that kind of treatment there. At the same time, President of the Council of France, second-highest ranking official after President, was a black man, Gaston Monnerville.

Thank you for the video Wardog. I was surprised the guy, at 6'23'', is surprised of whisky being used for the repaint of an aircraft for the purpose of being historical-like in a film. Everybody knows that whisky, an average of one or two bottles a painter, is absolutely necessary for the repaint of aircraft in historical films.

I could not understand that either.
What I read about that was us Afro American servicemen was treated equal in France during ww2. But Cannes might been different. It always been a posh place with different nasjonality. And racism was happening in France too.
I liked the movie mostly because of the Corsair,  the normality non dramatic tone down Hollywood drama. It seems to me all aspects was focused on the story.
