setting up a ww1 airfield; does the daimlerdr4-winch or quad-winch vehicles have any other Ai functions than being just a vehicle, like pulling something or to do with balloons?

From a casual glance, they have the same properties as other vehicles. They can be a spotter, or a maintenance vehicle for rearm, refuel, repair. They would be support vehicles for a WWi balloon crew, but the function of actually retracting a balloon when it is threatened is done with waypoints, and not related to the winch vehicles.

They are additional scenery basically.

HI J. I saw balloons retracting before, and was looking for a proper setup group; could not find one so far, other than these instructions on when your guns refuse:

Guess i'll check Vander's EMB to see what's under the hood there ...

I can probably hook you up on that. Let me dig around and find one. Basically you just set 2 waypoints on the same spot as the balloon at ground level and the altitude of the balloon. Trigger the upper waypoint with a proximity trigger or checkzone and down it goes after a short delay to the 2nd waypoint.

I actually prefer Snoopy's solution ... :hunter:

In 4.705 there are some changes made to balloon winching ...

2. Balloons now have collidable tethers which can ruin a pilot day and can be towed;
3. Quad and Daimler DR.4 balloon
winches added for Flying Circus (for mission designers: a balloon will tether to a truck or ship with a winch that is closer than 50 m on mission start);

It sounds like you can connect it to the winch truck and when it winches down, use the 2nd balloon waypoint to trigger the truck, which could then move the balloon to another location. That might have some cool possibilities.

How does the winch work? I can attach the balloon to it but then the balloon will not follow the waypoint anymore and will stay on the ground. I tried to attach the balloon waypoints to the winch but that does not help. Any clues how to make it work?

I don't know, It will require some experimentation. If you figure it out, let us know.

You could try a waypoint attached to the truck and another one in the same spot at a higher altitude and see if that works.

The balloon waypoints up or down were repaired in the last hotfix. Set them as you normally do with waypoint object targeting the balloon.

It is not necessary to target link the balloon to the winch. Having it enabled within the 50m radius of the winch and it joins itself.

Use a separate set of waypoints to move the winch vehicles. They will tow the balloons either up or down. There is a collision radius though. Make sure you don't lower the balloon into the winch.

And yes. The balloon will raise or lower when the winch vehicle is moving. Haven't looked into the ships. Do not know which of them have winches.

Good Luck in your Mission Design,

Tip

Is this 50m in 3D or 2D? As in, if your balloon starts at an altitude of 50m above ground, does it need to be at exactly the same position as the winch, or can it be 50m off?

2D. Height of the balloon itself doesn't matter.
