Are These Good System Specs for VR?

Hey all,

I ran across a deal to get a pre-built machine with a Ryzen 9 5900 CPU, liquid cooled (not 5900X), RTX 3090 GPU, and 32Gb of DDR4 RAM running at 3200MHz. Price tag is $2,400.

Seems like a steal given current GPU prices, but I'm not sure how that CPU/RAM combo will do with IL2 in VR, I know RAM clocks are pretty important (with 4000MHz being best) and not sure how the lower power of the 5900 vs the 5900X compares.

I currently run an older 1st gen WMR headset, but want to upgrade to a Reverb G2 later this year. How well do you think this system would hold up? I did not see any systems in the benchmark thread with these exact specs.

Thanks in advance for your input, this community has a wealth of knowledge!

WOW, if you could get this for $2400.00, I can't imagine it lasting very long! I paid $2800.00, last fall for pre-built Ryzen 5800x, RTX 3080ti, 16GB DDR4 3200MHz, regular priced $3200.00 which handles IL-2 pretty well, with a Quest 2.  I'm no pc expert by any means, but everywhere I look that pre-built looks like it should be well over $3000.00.

heck, that 3090 alone can fetch a pretty hefty price...

Yeah, I agree that is seems like a deal for the price. My biggest hesitation is the fact that it's... from Alienware. I don't hear much good about them these days, lots of complaints about poor cooling and airflow, cheap components, etc.

I didn't see Alienware in the post? The cooling issue complains was the reason I stopped looking at Alienware last fall.

I guess I forgot to put that in the original post, but yeah, it's the Alienware Ryzen R10. Even with as good a deal as it seems for the 3090, their reputation lately makes me inclined to skip it.

Thanks for the input, glad to hear from someone who actually owns one! What CPU/GPU temps do you typically see?

They also have a system on sale with a Ryzen 5800X+RTX 3080 for $1,700. I'm curious how that stacks up against the 3090+5900 for VR performance.

I have an R10 5950x/3090 and am happy with it.  Rest assured I paid far more than $2400USD one year ago.  I posted framerates on syn_vander benchmarks under paul_leonard.  Check out that thread and look at spreadsheet.  Comments on performance referenced RAM timings and I upgraded and have picked up 5fps.  I don’t think 5950x was helpful as not really taken advantage of, but 3090 for sure. I am happy with machine as 3090 not available in Canada at that time otherwise.  $2400 is a bargain!!!  I can run at 90fps G2 100% using dburne settings (search).  Happy customer.

Sorry, never checked any of those figures.  Just turn it on and set settings within game and OpenVR.  ?  I can run every setting one notch down from full-on and get a steady 80-90 FPS, also only run res at 2184p, but with the Aero HMD that's plenty IMO.

That 3090's the way to go, that's the only thing I wish I would have changed when ordering this two years ago.  The 3080's very good though, and not running any modes or anything other then stock, no FSR etc.  Power supply is 1000 as well.

Be forewarned, on-line gaming puts more of a demand on your CPU then off-line does, so don't scrimp on the CPU chip if you plan to go on-line, which I highly recommend.

You might be able to build a better computer for that money if you could snag the B-Stock 3090 FTW3 for $1199..
