I wonder how many of you use customized settings ... i tend to set Custom for a lot as in Normal mode i can't even land a P47 without an exploding crash it seems.

I know, i know: practice, but what a pity after finishing a difficult and long campaign mission without a Saved Game position. At least this fello got out alive:

lucky pilot - poor crew chief...

I started a couple of years ago with nearly all custom help options and step by step I got more guts and switched them all off, what gave me so much more joy and excitement out of this great sim.

But oh boy the first flights after enabling the realistic FM with no symplified physics...? I wrecked so much planes, you could think I'm a saboteur.

So I see no sinn in your decision, especialy to prevent messing up after long missions:good:(did the same for a long time)

Biggest goal here is to have fun?

cheers

I used to use a lot of "helpers" to fly. Wonder Woman view, auto engine management, HUD overlay, etc. Gradually I got used to flying with the cockpit in the way, and learned it's not so hard to keep track of the engine rpm and prop setting, and now I fly with just a plain cockpit and everything off except chase view (because I like to look at the paint jobs sometimes) and icons on so I can see the subtitle prompts. No messages, no HUD, no minimap, no technochat. I wish I could get rid of the icons without a mod too.

VR was the biggest step to getting rid of "helpers". I don't need them any more.

Many years later, it seems normal to fly the plane with just the instruments on the dashboard. Keep what you need and gradually you can lose the simplified controls 1 by 1.

My path followed the above comments. I started with everything turned on and as I became comfortable, and rearranged my HOTAS setup accordingly, I turned off most of the aides.

I do fly with the icons on. Why? I'm 70 and both blue-green and red-brown colorblind. Sometimes, if I'm above a SPAD or a Spitfire and I pause the game, I actually cannot see the bandit! All I see often is the red info icon. That's why I'll never play online.

My philosophy with a new program is to layer things on.

First up Im only affected by my own incompetence and do not need helpers for any medical/age related condition. If I did I wouldnt hesitate to find solutions within the helpers if that meant I could enjoy a game.

My approach is the opposite to what's stated above - If I cant land a plane I practice until I can and before I go off on an adventure. Same with gunnery (most having seen my gunnery will contest this point!!), bombing, rockets.

I havent played a sim with helpers or Tech chat for years. Intially in Bos, I was very dependent on tech chat before realising how little it was actually needed, primarily because the engine managment isnt so difficult the way its implemented but additinally as a result of learning how to operate each airframe by reference to the notes on it . The small amount of additional care required not to keep stuff in the red in a certain airframe by reference to the clocks just adds to the involvement I feel with the mission.

Ive never been a fan of external views either which I think comes from years of playing CloD on the ATAG server online when I got back into combat sims.

I did 15 years of simming at "max realism hard settings", but it was just personal preference. I used to sim almost daily, so it was easy to focus.

Now after having kids, a business, a job, and a wife that's pretty social I probably fly IL-2 less than twice per month.

I often turn map icons on just because I'm too lazy to navigate if I can't be 100% focussed. I'll use time acceleration and pause alot. I've become a single player simmer when I used to be MP. I can't deal with starting a mission then having the server restart halfway through my flight if I only get one flight that whole week.

This hobby is to be fun, so we gotta do what we gotta do to make it fun. There's no sin, even if you shoot down your annoying wingman :)

I agree. I often remind myself: Hey! It's supposed to be entertainment, not a job. I know that for some playing with everything off IS entertaining. But not for me.

I'll take off; hit autopilot, 8x, switch to map view, and read.
