Knarley-Bob Posted May 7, 2022 Posted May 7, 2022 Flying a mission in career mode, clipped an enemy 190 fighter, bent my props (P-51) and set her down oh so gently on her belly and died. Restart mission: Headed out on auto pilot, X-8 to get back to where the mishap occurred. My plane, on "Auto Pilot" collides with a wing man and I died. Can't seem to catch a break today. KB
cardboard_killer Posted May 8, 2022 Posted May 8, 2022 You should hear the wingman's side of the story. 7
AndyJWest Posted May 8, 2022 Posted May 8, 2022 Clearly the devs need to program a bit of 'unnecessary death avoidance' into the AI. Maybe they should have a word with the developers of the DCS F-14, since they've managed to program abject cowardice into their AI backseat-radar-dude. Line up a little off, or trap a little hard, and pop, out he goes....
Knarley-Bob Posted May 8, 2022 Author Posted May 8, 2022 Well, the landing was a loose-loose deal anyway, either bail and get captured, or belly land and most likely die, or get captured. Dying on auto pilot sort of surprised me, but it has happened before, go figure. Previously before I watched a FW-190 which I had riddled with 50cals. from nose to tail, and wing tip to wing tip, hemorrhaging a greenish fluid, fly back to it's base, land, taxi to the end of the runway only to have the motor seize up at the end of the runway. Was having one of those days....thought it was kinda humorous.
AndyJWest Posted May 8, 2022 Posted May 8, 2022 A sense of humour when dealing with simulations is generally a good thing. Same for real life really, as long as you are still in possession of the necessary organs to laugh about it, when contemplating the smoking hole...

The greenish fluid was fuel, and since fuel tanks take up so much space, it is a common occurrence to shoot them full of holes them while not damaging anything more immediately destructive. Seems like .50 cal didn't punch big enough holes in the tanks for all the fuel to leak out before he landed.
[CPT]Crunch Posted May 8, 2022 Posted May 8, 2022 The AI has gotten so used to us humans they can't handle the steady predictability of flight path on autopilot. 1
