Ok folks, I'm at the end of my tether with this one. Went on the PC last weekend to continue with my reintroduction into IL2 after a long hiatus that only restarted a few months ago.

I purchased GB Stalingrad on Steam and it had been working flawlessly.

Come last weekend I fired-up the PC and waited for the system to catch up with all the usual antivirus updates etc before launching the game direct from the shortcut as I always do, this time steam loaded in the taskbar, updated Steam and IL2 but at the end of it the game failed to load, no error messages. Tried from Steam, same result, click on 'start' the button changes to 'cancel/stop' whilst trying to load then returns to 'start' after maybe three to four seconds.

I then realised that a mahoosive windows update was trying to install at the same time which successfully installed so I restarted the machine.

Tried uninstall/reinstall using Steam multiple times and to multiple folder locations and folder names, no change.

Today I had enough after trying it all again so I uninstalled Steam and that version of Great Battles Stalingrad.

Purchased and downloaded GB Stalingrad from IL2 direct, now I'm getting the error 'failed to load backend library' and looking at the main and sub-folders of IL2 it is incredibly sparse compared to that in the Steam version;

bin
data
unins000.dat

unins000

data consists of:

updater

enableerrorreporting

master.cfg

startup.cfg

ViewCrashDumps

bin consists of:

game (folder):

Launcher

rofuplib64.dll

There are no files larger than 4000kb and I am wondering whether it is finding old files whilst installing and then not installing the full set of files.

If anybody else has had this issue or can help in any way I'd really appreciate your help please.

Tom

UPDATE

After trying every scenario I could think of and taking advice from other threads when people have had similar problems in the past I ran out of options and ended up having to reinstall Windows as I believe that the Update had corrupted the game files.
