Stonehouse Posted May 5, 2022 Posted May 5, 2022 (edited) Originally posted here https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/78332-wingtip-vortices/?do=findComment&comment=1183439 Giving it a thread of it's own so it's visible. New version includes altered dds files - I was trying to avoid doing this as I know full well that I suck at changing these files. Anyway seems to give approximately the results desired. It looks better in game than in a still pic. Changelog 13 May 2022 - No change to content, just removed 7zip file since it causes hassles. 12 May 2022 - No change to mod content, simply added a zip file alternate d/l option since the 7zip one gives problems to a few people 6 May 2022 - altered texture files and effects txt files 5 May 2022 - updated version of the original based solely on effects txt files changes. WingVortices.zip 6.002 compatible Edited August 14 by Stonehouse remove 7zip add zip file 10 1 2
Picchio Posted May 5, 2022 Posted May 5, 2022 (edited) Is it me or there are no vortices visible in the screenshot? Other than that, I'm curious to try it out. Thanks for the work! Edit: sorry, I see the trails... but aren't they still a bit too subtle, even if the scene is cloudy? Edited May 5, 2022 by Picchio
Stonehouse Posted May 5, 2022 Author Posted May 5, 2022 Yeah still fiddling with the values. They shouldn't be too solid really as I understand things. If they end up looking like smoke trails then they'd be overdone. They actually were more visible in game than the screen shot.
trek Posted May 7, 2022 Posted May 7, 2022 Your Zip file doesn't seem to work. At least it doesn't for me. There is nothing to unzip.
Stonehouse Posted May 7, 2022 Author Posted May 7, 2022 I just checked it and it seems fine from my point of view. Can you give some more info as to what you see at your end? Are you using 7zip to try to unpack the files?
-=[]=-little-Guardian Posted May 11, 2022 Posted May 11, 2022 You can rename the downloaded file to "WingVortices.7z" and then it should open properly using 7zip
trek Posted May 11, 2022 Posted May 11, 2022 Little guardian, thanks, renaming the file worked for me. The problem with this particular mod is weird. I'm using 7zip and I even downloaded several mods here to check and the others gave me the proper zip file to unpack.
Stonehouse Posted May 11, 2022 Author Posted May 11, 2022 Ok very odd. I renamed the file to 7zip because the forum insists on this rather than 7z. However, I always check that I can unpack the files before I upload them. 7zip gives better compression than normal zip but perhaps I will start using zip if it has better compatibility with people.
trek Posted May 12, 2022 Posted May 12, 2022 Stonehouse, yeah your idea might be good to at least test. Although no one else has indicated here that they've experienced the problem I've had. I even updated 7zip from my version I was using from 2019 to the latest one on the 7zip site that is dated 2021 to see if that was the problem but it wasn't. So one good thing is I didn't know you could just rename the file to make it work. Seems we never stop learning something new with the whole PC Gaming hobby! Anyway, thanks for your mod.
Stonehouse Posted May 12, 2022 Author Posted May 12, 2022 Added a zip file alternate d/l option. As you can see it's almost twice as big as a 7zip file. Hopefully between the two, no-one else will have any hassles. Cheers!
Vishnu Posted May 12, 2022 Posted May 12, 2022 The alternative works. Whenever you 7zip I get a weird flashing browser.
Stonehouse Posted May 12, 2022 Author Posted May 12, 2022 Wonder if some browsers are expecting 7z instead of 7zip. Maybe the forum needs a tweak to allow 7z file extensions instead. Odd thing is I use Edge or Chrome as many probably do here and most don't have a problem so trying to be logical if people are using the same browser updated to the same level it kind of implies a difference in local PC configuration causing the issue. eg File associations or browser security or something. @VishnuDo/Did you get the same problem with the AI dogfight gunnery mod I upload recently? I may have to change to using zip everywhere in this forum I think.
trek Posted May 12, 2022 Posted May 12, 2022 Posted this in your other thread by mistake. I'll reiterate here. I'm using Chrome too. I DL'd your AAA mod and the ai gunnery mod, same no go result with 7zip. Just to check again I re-downloaded clear reticule mod and Rheinland with borders mod and they both worked. My PC with Chrome only seems to like 7z. I wonder if a recent Chrome update has made it more sensitive with the 7zip file naming convention?
Stonehouse Posted May 13, 2022 Author Posted May 13, 2022 Thanks for checking Trek. I'll go through and replace each 7zip with a zip I think as time permits as that seems the path of least resistance. 1
Stonehouse Posted May 13, 2022 Author Posted May 13, 2022 @trek @Vishnu I think I have replaced all my mods 7zip attachments with zip files. Since you two have been impacted you are most likely to know if I have missed something. If I have please let me know. Thanks 1
Vishnu Posted May 13, 2022 Posted May 13, 2022 (edited) Thanks for everything. Ya. It’s something weird with 7zip. Not sure what. But when you upload as a zip file winrar has no problem. It must conflict with chrome somehow. PS. Love the vortices mod! Edited May 13, 2022 by Vishnu
Mysticpuma Posted May 15, 2022 Posted May 15, 2022 Works well! Would be great if the vortices could create some spirals.... but certainly more visible ? 1
