Boomerang Posted April 25, 2022 Posted April 25, 2022 Thought this topic may be an interest to some whom likes using older or newer hardware while choosing Linux to achieve a result that can get the job done, (mind this can vary based on hardware, information read, and experience). I've used Linux in the past and have decided to use it again for many reasons, one of which, I love my older Dell Rugged laptops, and some of the older classic games. Also my laptop has survived for this long, still works fine, but feel a leaner OS is needed in order to achieve a better experience with what the hardware has to offer. The link below displays "Native" games that run on linux using proton within steam. Providing your hardware is capable, (this list is growing with titles all the time, given the steam deck has now been released). Link: https://www.protondb.com/explore I installed Star Wars "Jedi Knight II", as this worked in the past. To date out of the box, (so to speak), no instant glory.. It only worked after entering within the compatibility settings, (within steam), where Proton 4.11-13 was selected. Game brightness settings appeared to alter nothing, but other than that all worked fine. It was interesting reading different working approaches within the comments, just figured less was best. Any helpful opinions?
Boomerang Posted May 5, 2022 Author Posted May 5, 2022 Think I just saw a tumble weed pass by. .. Have tested some of the old classics within Steam on a 4th Gen i5 intel Laptop, (Mesa). Most work Native and a few needed the assistance of Proton within Steam Play's compatibility setting, (Steam Menu). GT Legends needed the assistance of Proton Tricks to acquire a dll file and Proton 5.0-10 via Steam Play's compatibility setting, (Steam), worked fine after that. IL-2 1946 just worked for me, was quite happy about that! Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy needed Proton 4.11-13. Alien Isolation just worked, (with all settings as low as they goes). I have also tested Jack2 and chose to run a Liqourix Kernel for music production. All worked once set up, (quite surprised considering the age of the Laptop). This experience is a good one for the learning curve (patience is required ). My older Brother used to own one of those Lotus Cortina's, (Colour was Green and Gold).
