Has anyone else had problems running Il-2 after the latest SteamVR beta update? I've had a crash which then proceeded to hog the disk for over an hour, preventing Il-2 from closing properly. I couldn't even kill the process. This happened twice, each time after flying a single quick mission.

It appears to be a SteamVR issue, and the hogging is most likely it trying to generate some bogus crash dump. I just want to know if anyone else ran into it.

Beta 1.22.8?  No problems here, even necksafer running fine with it, but Il-2 had to be set to run as admin with this beta, or it wouldn't fire up.

The SteamVR devs couldn't organize a piss-up in a brewery, they break as much as they 'fix' with just about every update.

I switched to OpenXR in DCS, and I wish it was possible for Il-2. Last I heard, it doesn't work, if it did, I'd just ditch SteamVR ASAP. The performance gains are awesome.

Since switching to the Varjo Aero back in Jan can't recall seeing any more Steam VR crashes, not even when exiting Steam VR like I used to see in previous headsets. And I am running the Beta as well. Steam VR has behaved very well for me with this headset. No idea why.

I did do a thorough cleaning out of Steam VR to start fresh with the Aero.

I'm able to run OpenXR just fine with IL-2.  It's when I add the ToolKit, that I have issues.  So IL-2 is the only flight sim (at the moment), that I don't use the ToolKit.

So for IL-2, I just go to the ToolKit companion app and disable it.  (I just need to remember to re-enable it for M$F$2020 and DCS...)  ?

Holy crap, I just tried the new OpenXR and it's stunning.  I can see the city Gymnits and Kelsh field at 1K above Koln clear as day without zoom, impossible in steamVR.  The horizon and distance views are shockingly good.  The bridges and shadows are superior, the cathedral sharp and crisp, I didn't experience any of that lod and texture slop steamVR does on it.

Bad part is can't use the toolkit for controls yet, or FSR/NIS, and necksafer needs steamVR.  I was running 140% OXR and still pulling 65 fps for minimum.

I never knew those small factory stacks had those delicate metal frames all over them, or nearly every spire in every building has a decorative ornament up there, must be lightning rods?  Take a U2 and do the tour if you can, something slow and admire the detail they put into the cities.  How to describe it, it's like the entire city is rendered in focus all at once, not just the part your currently over in your bubble.  Even without the controls this is the best this game has ever appeared in VR for me, could tell a difference immediately when the hanger fired up, the mills and upper walk way rails look outstanding.

Working well and seems stable this round, except for the toolkit, it can be installed and running for your other sims, has an off selection for IL-2.

Where do I download it and how do I make it work? Sounds very promising.

Is it Headset specific? I use a Vive pro 2.

Midway down in the Per Game Install section, the 64 bit DLL, you'll need to replace the one in IL-2's bin/game, back it up if you later need to revert.

You'll also need the OpenXR tools for WMR in the MS store, install it.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/openxr-tools-for-windows-mixed-reality/9n5cvvl23qbt?activetab=pivot:overviewtab

There's also an OpenXR toolkit, but doesn't yet work in IL-2, this allows on the fly adjustments and settings while inside VR, in game.  Hopefully it gets supported because there's all kinds of useful things, when it does get support IL-2 is going to a whole new game in VR.

https://github.com/mbucchia/OpenXR-Toolkit/releases

If you want to take a look and try, who knows with your headset it might work.

Fire up WMR, than launch IL-2 directly, don't fire up steamVR, you should see the steam style triangles trigger twice in a blue background.  Make sure you have each one of these Apps and tools set to run as Administrator including IL-2.

Oh man, I have dcs running with openXR and if I can get this working with il2 that’d be awesome!   Unfortunate for the companion app now working because just the saturation slide alone helps with dull colours in vr headsets….
I’ll be sure to try this tomorrow if I have time… steam vr has been crashing hard for me lately..

Yup, when the tweaker tool works I'm junking steam, went back to steamVR for now.  OXR's excellent but sort of useless as of now because there's no ability to tweak it yet.  Main thing is you can't achieve 90fps without severely downing your settings, than your back to square one with blur.  The FPS you do get are rock solid, they stay tight within about a ten FPS band settings dependent.  Best I achieved was 67 to 80 band, fairly smooth, but I'd prefer hitting 90 top end, don't think that's happening without scaling.

Motion Reprojection is horrid on the prop and has jitters like crazy in a fight.  The outstanding thing is the remarkable clarity over the horizons, I could see landmarks and features very clearly 8 grid blocks out with about 2K altitude and relate them easily and quickly to the map, navigation has never been easier.  That's always been impossible in the blurred shimmering fishbowl of steamVR fogged up horizons.  It also takes aircraft spotting to a new level, very good to excellent, because of the crystal clear horizons.  Necksafer don't work, but when the bandits passed through the blind behind was quite easy to reacquire them with quick wide scans.

Wowzers!! OpenXR does work!!!   Unfortunately I can’t get that 90fps to hold I’m hoping they get motion reprojection working better in the future.. already seeing a crisper image..
