=IRFC=Gascan Posted April 13, 2022 Posted April 13, 2022 Since the in-game photo recon and artillery spotting mechanics aren't released yet, I just did a little experiment. I took out a SU-152 and my brother Kotori spotted the fall of my shots from the air. I fired over a forest and he walked me in to score several hits on a target 2.5 small map squares away that was completely invisible to me. He was in a 109, and complained that it was too fast to comfortably loiter and spot falling shells. While the gun could still elevate significantly more to fire at longer distances, I would have no reliable reference point to adjust my fire from, and the gun was nearing the limits of its accuracy (shells fired without any adjustment were starting to wander a bit). I used the range adjust and then aimed the crosshair at the base of the trees of a nearby forest (then the tops of the trees when I needed a bit more range) I'd be interested in trying a player-operated artillery spotting mission with a proper Great War flavor. If anyone who can operate the mission builder is able and willing to put a spawn for the SU-152 or SU-122 on the Arras map with a few fixed targets (bunkers, artillery batteries, ammo dumps, machine gun/sand bag emplacements, tanks, etc) on the other side of the line and either a Bristol or a DFW or something for spotting (RE-8 once we get FC Vol. 3). Gotta be a multiplayer map, since a player is required for operating the gun as well as for the spotting. A repair/rearm truck would be useful near the intended site for the artillery to fire from, since the SU-152 only carries 20 rounds. Apparently trees play merry hell with spotting, since the shell can detonate early if it hits a tree, making the shell seem short when it would otherwise have been a bit long. Can you spot where the gun that fired is? Here is the same shot, but opposite perspective. 4 2
56RAF_Roblex Posted April 13, 2022 Posted April 13, 2022 1C have talked about making artillery spotting a bigger part of the game but I am not sure if that was just FC or if they wanted to bring in an Axis version of the Po-2, eg Storch or Jungmeister, before working on the artillery. I think it would make for an interesting map to have a target that is extremely well defended against low & medium level bombing so the defenders have to try to find the artillery piece and the spotters (who may even be on the ground!) . Yes the attackers could also use high level bombers but even that is a plus as we might finally get to use the fighters that work better at altitude.

76SQN-FatherTed Posted April 13, 2022 Posted April 13, 2022 I do love this idea. How many shots did it take to hit the target?
Avimimus Posted April 14, 2022 Posted April 14, 2022 Imagine an artillery spotting module with an Fi-156, Grasshopper, and Fw-189 to augment the U-2VS... with the ability to control multiple different types of AI artillery... 1
