Bilbo_Baggins Posted April 12, 2022 Posted April 12, 2022 (edited) Not a complaint or anything, but was just wondering why we don't have guns damaged anymore? I remember the guns used to become inoperable after hits to the airframe (especially wing mounted guns) quite often, but it never occurs now? Shouldn't this be brought back? Just a thought. Calos_01 Posted April 12, 2022 Posted April 12, 2022 I have experienced it yesterday, I was flying P-40.
357th_KW Posted April 12, 2022 Posted April 12, 2022 There used to also be cases where you could detonate the cannon ammo in a target's magazines - I don't think I've seen that happen in a year or two. 1

It's one of those oddities that's hard to do intentionally, but it might happen when you're hosing a 109/Fw-190 in a Tempest, and it explodes, but you don't really know why unless you watch a recording of it. It's too hard to aim at a 109's magazine intentionally, because it's too close to the fuselage and you're more likely to hit that instead. 190s are too annoying (roll rate) to get a solid hit on their wings unless they're in a turn. Long story short, I tried to detonate a Typhoon's cannons in a Yak-9, because that's the ideal combination of a sluggish target with an accurate attacker. I can't get this level of accuracy in a 109 or a 190 or any other plane: Spoiler There's several AP 20mm hits right through what I assume would be the magazine area. And HE hits. And of course some assorted 12.7mm as well. So if that doesn't do the trick, it must be pretty fluky. For the record, the wing was so badly damaged, it later cracked under G: Spoiler In my experience, it's really difficult to break a Hawker wing (with gunfire alone). They're so tough that even after the above plane violently bellied in, the wing still didn't snap off. It just remained half-broken.
oc2209 Posted April 13, 2022 Posted April 13, 2022 Yak-9T w/37mm HE, hit between the breech bumps: Spoiler Fw-190A-8 w/30mm mods: Spoiler The wing break is the result of many hits; not the result of an explosion. Question: is the large box sticking out of the wing the 20mm ammo box for the nearest (outboard) cannon?
I./JG52_Woutwocampe Posted April 18, 2022 Posted April 18, 2022 Gun damage/jam should happen way more often. I have seen it less than 10 times since I purchased BOS. More than 3500 hours. I think I have seen my windshield being torn away by damage more often than a gun being damaged and jamming. Damage to the oxygen system happens at least 10 times more often than damage to guns!
=FEW=fernando11 Posted April 18, 2022 Posted April 18, 2022 In my experience, wing ammo explosion in the early fw190 are posible, not "common" but has happened to me both in MP and SP. And I mean as in, I was flying the 190.

Just happened to be recording for other reasons, captured a 190 ammo explosion. 99% confidence it is what it looks like: Spoiler Screen cap, different angle: Spoiler That fireball where the wing used to be--it's larger than a regular 20mm impact explosion. It's got to be the 190's magazine detonating.
