Hi All,

I have been away from Il-2 for a couple years but I have been thinking of coming back. My question is,  now that tank crew is finished and we have player-controlled howitzers like the SU-122, I was wondering if anyone had tried to do combined operations with these guns, using a player in a aircraft to spot for them for example? is this even possible? Can these guns fire at a long enough distance to make this feasible? I think it could be great fun to sit above a target in my U-2 and tell the gunner in his tank to fire more left or right etc..?

Short answer: Yes

Long Answer, I played SU-122 and had a friend in the PO-2 directing my fire. Gunner commands for tank commanders are there too.

Okay, great, thanks for the response Leon! I think it could be interesting then to try a co-ordinate between observation planes and the tankers to see if we could "shell" an airfield or even try something like counter-battery shooting using all-human controlled vehicles..

As a side note, I wonder if anyone has a good technical understanding or document about the method used to direct and correct artillery fire? I know in WW1 they used some kind of "clock code", but I havent really been able to find much about how it works in detail..

EDIT: I actually just found this by googling clock code artillery correction ww1 - it helps if you search for the right terms!

See here for the British system in WW1. I know the Germans used a slightly different system.
