Any old or current WWIIOL players here?

I was a day one player.   It started June 6, 2001.   It took me 5 days before I could actually log in.

I remember the tediously long Opel and Beddy drives,  and being glued to my monitor, chatting the guy next to me.   I was even a Builder, at one time.  It was my life.   IT was the first video game my son ever played, sitting on my lap.

I also remember massive formations of Stukas heading to target and the towns being packed full of players.

At one point, the forums were moving so fast, that after you made a post, it would appear on the 2nd page.   It was new.  Massive. Ground breaking.   Truly something to behold.

Real life took over, and I had kids, and paying the monthly subscription became too much, considering how often I played.    Many guys eventually were paying the monthly fee just to post in the forums.   I left.

I started popping back in over the past few months with a free account to see how things are.   The battles seem to be few and far between.  My son checked the players online through Steam at peak US play period, and there was like 30 guys online.  The graphics are ancient.   Still like they were in 2001.

They are only now working on putting the JU88 in game!   That was one plane the Axis side was begging for, YEARS ago.   It's like your first love, you remember it fondly, but realize it's in your past.

Salutations,

I am an old player of WWIIOnline. I spent countless hours playing and gaining general ranks so I could post missions. I really enjoyed the gameplay.

I can vividly remember setting up armored ambushes in a T-38. Yes the lowly t-38. It had a good gun for its tank size at the early stages of the war. I would ambush, knock out a allied tank.... retreat to a new position (because the game showed where you died then) so one couldn't safely remain in the original ambush site. Great fun and quite the challenge.

I got pretty good with the bf109 too. I used to practice flying through the open hangars. I specifically remember one dogfight with a spitfire. They were supposed to be the best  handling allied fighter. We dueled on until I ran out of ammo. Around and around we flew. I finally dove down and made a run for it. That night I got on the forums and shared this dogfight experience. Another pilot joined the forum and mentioned experiencing the duel with me and than it had been the best fight he ever had with a 109. It made my day. Great fun and experience.

I got turned off a bit when I felt there was an obvious attempt to take control of the game using the High Commands. They wanted to control the battlefield. I was of general rank in the game. I didn't need anyone from HQ making missions for me. I could read the battle map and post missions where needed. I think this perception was what finally soured me on the game. Still, my memories are basically good concerning WWIIOnline.

S!

Did play it some, even have an unopened game pack with free 30-day sub in it. Just wasn't my cup of tea. Idea was great though.

Play a bit in early years, and at few years ago when are a "Free Player" for bolt action infantry only, but think this option was removed.

Unique experience, good memories.

I currently play this as axis/luftwaffe. There is a free ~30 day trial without need of payment/card. Decent fights at times and is the only game of its kind with a seamless map of europe. Great fun strafing people using units on the ground.

Am still a newbie when it comes to flying in general, would love to see how some seasoned pilots do in game and fly together sometime.

p.s. after the 30 day trial the acct goes to free to play which has access to free play plane (axis has 109e1, actually competent weapon even later in the campaign) rifleman, smg, light tanks, truck, light atg/aaa, paratroopers/ju52 etc.
