My most crazy landing

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

So long story short. Just getting back to IL2 after a long time. Started a P51 carrere, and having a lot of fun. I am not from Germany but my Girlfriend is. And today I just found her city Krefeld in IL2. So I started a Quick mission and flew to the City (playing in VR). So not surprising the city don't look accurate at all, but just fun it was there. Flying the FW-190D for the occasion, and decided I just had to try to land in the city center. Back in old IL2 1946 I loved doing stunts, landing in strangest places. And just having a lot of fun. But even I could see the streets were way too narrow for this to have any realistic chance. And I was in a hurry because it started to get really late and I had to be up really early the next day. So I flew over the city full speed, took a sharp turn hoping I would bleed enough speed to slam down the flaps and wheels. I realized I could not really look at the speed in VR at the same time trying to have an eye on the street. But I was already too low, I could not see the street under me only the houses, the fw 190 really can be a bit hard to look forward and down in.

So I could not see the street, nor did I know my speed, only the roofs flying past me. Hoped for the best and then I was down. Breaked as hard as I could and wolla, I could not believe I had done it. Really cool experience in VR, and for some reason it feels like a real life achievement lol. Too bad only Crappy phone picture after the landing. And it was a perfect landing, no broken wings ?

actually it does. The devs worked with reference material, aerial photos and such to build the map.  But considering that this is a photo form Krefeld in march 1945, I'm not surprised your girlfriend didn't recognize it

This, but also you don't have the buildings from back then. On the map there is only a certain number of buildings for the towns, which repeat again and again. Of course you have the streets, where they were, but without the correct builings, there is hardly a chance to recognize, where you are.

They did, and the general layout of cities is mostly correct for the cities I've checked, even though that usually doesn't completely correspond with the current (modern-day) layout of the cities. However, this is just the *general* layout (railway tracks, large roads, general shape/outline of the city); because the Devs used a limited set of pre-made building blocks, the exact street plan is often quite different.

EDIT: just to clarify, I don't mean to say that using pre-made building blocks is a bad thing, I'm just adding some nuance to the claim that the cities are accurate for the period.

I mean, this isn't a city builder, it's a flight sim. I wouldn't expect any studio to recreate every single building, especially when you can only find photos of the cities when they're bombed in many cases

Absolutely. Although it would be cool to take the Convolutional Neural Nets that Microsoft used for MSFS and let them loose on aerial photographs from the period. But yeah, you cannot expect things like that from a Dev team as small as IL2's...

Well I kinda thought they used some maps, and draw some kinda of rought estimate of the city.  I let her try IL2 in VR this weekend and she definitely thinks she reconice streets and the church placement and so on. Who am I to say one way or another. Cool anyway, glad they put effort into it :)  . Hehe she manage to put the P51 into a spin at low altitude and almost puked, and I somehow managed to get her out of the spin without using the rudder ?

I have to second this.

I'm actually pretty amazed about how much detail the devs put into recreating even smaller towns on the Rhineland map.

Being German myself and living in a rather small town (population of roughly 71,000 people as of today and about 30,000 by the end of WW2) I was quite amazed that they integrated it as a part of the Rhineland map at all. It's the town Bocholt (Germany, that is, not the Belgium town that goes by the same name), you can easily find it by selecting the free flight starting point near Münster in QMB, then heading west for about 63km/ 39mi.

Of course it's not a perfect recreation (there is only one church when there should be two, the river running through it being a little too wide and the northern part of the town kinda missing, which is a little sad as a personal matter, since my family's house was located there and still is, after being destroyed during the final days of WW2 and being rebuild in the same spot), it is still easily recognizable from the air. The roundish arangement of the towns core, which is still a leftover from the midevil, has been recreated really well and some important landmarks, like the river deviding the town (even though being a little too wide, as mentioned above), are there and mostly in the right places.

My favorite detail however is the train station, which is in the exact same spot where it used to be and still is.

So yeah, big props to the devs for the work they put into this.
