To be fair - much (not saying all) of the flying was CGI/composite.

Of course the action scenes were CGI, but to be fair, it had probably the most acting in real flying planes ever in the history of cinema. At least I can't recollect any other aviation movie that had more. That's also one of the reasons, why they chose F-18's, 2-seaters, with real Navy pilots flying the planes, while actors were in back seats. And the last shot with Tom Cruise really flying the Mustang, really great.

I liked the movie a lot. There were unrealistic or kind of absurd things also, obvious for people in our hobby, but it was still good entertainmaint about something that we like, aviation.

Pretty good feedback from those who have "been there done that"

CAUTION: DO NOT WATCH THIS VIDEO IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE YET

JellO is great.

Keep in mind you're watching sponsored media here.

They mention the reasons for not using F-35s in the movie if I recall correctly?

I saw the movie yesterday and I like it, it is not always easy to do second parts but this one is good enough.

Regarding the use of F35 they argue GPS-jamming, but movies are movies, not documentaries. Just have great fun for 2 hours if you like planes (or not!).

I remember well when I saw the first movie 36 years ago when I was 16!

My wife and I just returned from watching it. There is no doubt that I was going to really like it, but my wife also really enjoyed it as well  – especially considering that she never saw the original (she was also born several years after the original was released ?).

I know it sounds cheesy, but that opening scene reminded me of why I love military aviation so much. I could watch that scene on loop over and over again. ??

It’s a good one - so is the recent  Tomcast episode. :)

Just saw it again.

I have to say that I enjoyed it MUCH more the second time through. I was able to turn off my critical brain to a greater degree and to more of an extent, went along for the ride.

I do have to say though, that if I were to make a list of "oh come on" moments for both movies, I think the list would be longer for this one...and that's saying something.

Still, I'd go see it again...and just might.

First time out to the movies in nearly three years: enjoyed it a lot, the better third enjoyed it even more than I did, but then she likes older men. You have to hand it to Tom Cruise, despite the scientology wierdness, he consistently delivers entertainment.

It is basically a smaltzy version of 633 Squadron, although with worse music, so I am hoping that someone will be able to make an IL-2 parody version combining tropes from both using the new Mozzie.

It will get more then few oscars, they made good decision to wait this long to make it cinema only and not dump it on streaming, movie like this is must see on big screen.

I've seen the sprint. That is enough. I wanna join the navy. I'm old enough now.

Maybe if you're going to make a movie with a ton of CGI and employ an army of foreign CGI/VFX artists, do a better job of making then sign NDA's and/OR, don't go on and on about how you didn't use CGI and "all the flying is real!"   OK, yes it was a small CGI team...compared to an Avenger movie. (Sit to the end of the credits)

I listened to that one yesterday too.

It’s too bad that the ‘on the ground’ information from the guys who actually did the VFX differs from the production/Hollywood propaganda.

It’s not necessarily bad that (despite the narrative), they actually used some CG planes - just stop calling it ‘ALL real’

I wouldn't call it "propaganda".  Any studio wants their movie to do well, especially a very expensive one, that's understandable.  As far as visual effects, CGI...of course it was used in the movie.  I don't think anyone is seriously suggesting that absolutely none was used in the movie...despite "Mover" droning on like he's the last bastion of truth... If you notice pretty much every other dude in the "I once did cool military things"  YT space (BJC, BRC, FPP, Ward Carroll, Cleared Direct, Jocko etc...) seem to understand that... which honestly just makes "Mover" seem really desperate for "edge lord" points.

In the end, its just a movie, enjoy it for what it is, there's much more dire stuff for us all to be concerned about than a real Super Hornet being CGI'd into a SU-57 or the USN didn't really allow SA-3s to be shot at their jets for a movie.

Now, pardon me while I plan my 4th viewing ??

I'm 100% with you - Mover does have that side to him...it's fairly dominant actually.

He's reacting to all of the "it's all real" whiners however, similar to myself except I'm reacting to the studio "it's all real flying" stuff, which maybe not propaganda, but disingenuous.

I want to go for a 3rd time...I'm going to get a hard eye-roll from the spousal unit on that one.

Maybe I'll drag her along.

Once you see it, you’ll never un-see it.  Tom’s front tooth is in the centre of his face.

Watched it today! It was pretty decent, except for the guy in front of me that had to comment EVERY scene, even the filler scenes, with his wife.

I was disappointed at the little screen time the P-51 got, but it's understandable.

I found their visualization of near-blackout / GLOC events very good. I believe this was by far the best depiction of the effects. I also like the fact that they put emphasis on the topic. The physiology adds another dimension to the "nearing obsolescence of human fighter pilots" theme.

Which reminds me that it's high time for me to go watch it a second time. Since I live in upper Bavaria by the foot of the Alps, this is a problem. I can't stand the German dub, so I have to go all the way to Munich to watch the movie in it's original audio. They have an awesome theatre there at the headquarters of ARRI (one of the best film camera makers). You get a glass of champaign right away, they have amazing electrically reclining seats with foot rests (you almost like like in a glider), the advertisement is really short, and you can place orders for food and booze before the actual movie starts. ?

Pretty good feedback from "Rain" (Former viper team pilot) and "Paco" (Former F-15E and F-18F WSO):
