I'm so HYPED for this movie!!! Looks like the they are fighting a country with SU-57 Felons...

Save the "but muh realism" whinging ?

I'm just looking for an entertaining movie with freaking fighter jets, not a documentary and this definitely looks to be that ?

Are you saying that they are moving away from the complete and faithful adherence to realism that comprised the first movie?

Do you mean from having the ROC flag replaced on the back? Not sure but probably not unfortunately, Paramount isn't gonna turn down those Chinese audience box office dollars.

I'm afraid you're right.

I'm also afraid the movie's gonna be Transformers with jets, but I'll be glad to be proven wrong.

At least they've got Jennifer Connelly going for them.

Oh man...

“We’re the best there is, who in the hell are they going to get to teach us?”

?

I’m going in basically to watch Rhino footage, with no other expectations. If it’s a good movie aside from that I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

I’m looking forward to it - but like Mav said - with managed expectations.

We need a The Great Santini prequel with him flying the F-4/CAS in Vietnam. :) Rhinos are for girls.

I was on work ups on the Enterprise with VA-94 when they shot scenes for the first movie. Ships TV interviewed them a couple of times. Getting that movie out didn't take as long as this one. It was out by the time we got to Australia. We got a copy of it on the boat when it was released, was nice of them to do that. After I retired from the USN I went to work for Boeing at NAS Lemoore, CA. They used VFA-125s Hanger, our lab is in the MOD on the front of the Hanger. Never saw Cruise or any of the other actors, but I'd hear some sailors talking about what they were doing. I'm looking to see how many times they show some other aircraft and hope yer not smart enough to notice. I never base my want to see a movie on its ratings, most of the time they don't have a clue.

Probably the best way to go into it, managed expectations.  The flying scenes are enough for me to go, everything else will be a bonus, hopefully its good though!

It's a Top Gun film... I'll probably find it highly enjoyable.

Will it be realistic? Probably not, but will that stop me from enjoying the film?... no, of course not.

It's entertainment after all, not a documentary.

They say he's a high-timer from DCS, whatever that is.

If you are of a certain age, then nostalgia means you are going to go and watch this and smile regardless of whether it is actually a "good" movie.

I suspect many here are of that age,  but no doubt there will be a younger generation who won't get what all the fuss is about.

I was super stoked the first time I heard about it.... And then COVID struck and they kept postponing the release. I've waited more than two years for it now and I'm sooo looking forward to watch it in a theatre. The airborne scenes i've seen so far were fun: superhornets AND low-level ops in the mountains

Tom Cruise takes James Corden flying with some incredible flying footage from "The Late Late Show with James Corden" last night:

The F-14 Tomcast Youtube channel just released a really good interview with a couple of USN veterans (The USN aerial coordinator and the pilot who did the tower flyby) who took part in filming the original Top Gun, the interview also includes some never before seen F-5 HUD tape from the filming:

Yeah, him and "Crunch" seem like great guys! their channel, Ward Carroll's and Fighter Pilot Podcast are definitely my "go to's" for military aviation related listening.

Vincent is fantastic, a good man. Aside from that he's also been a big help to me in my content-creation endeavors.

Watched the movie and its great, action is good, story is easy going no extra stuff to slow the pace, it will be a true summer hit.

Was with ppl who are not so into airplanes and some didnt even saw first one and they all say its good, so i think its not just me fanboying about it, will probably go one more time.

Just got back from the theater - it's solid, and dare I say better than the first (which is saying a lot, because the first is my favorite movie of all time). Some suspension of disbelief is required (it's a move, after all), but holy heck do they hit all the high notes. There's a lot of nostalgia involved (no spoilers, but man from the first frame I was a little kid again). Definitely see it in the theater - I'm going to see it a second time to catch it on IMAX. They made an 80s blockbuster in 2022 - my wife said it was way less cheesy than she expected, and she's spot on. They took the best from the first film and kept it, and got rid of the low points. Really well done.

If every 15 seconds or less during any kind of flying scene is “some” then sure.

It was dumb, but fairly entertaining so long as I tried to forget what I know about Naval aviation…or just aviation period. Still like the original better.

“Dumb but good for a Hollywood aviation movie” is about where I’d place it. I liked the Ice Man scene a lot - I also thought Miles Teller was perfectly cast…it has moments.

My wife loved it, but she also knows jack-all about airplanes, or WTF wouldn’t they just send F-35’s, or what a WEZ is etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc…

Yeah, I was 16 and dating a Canadian and we went on a date to watch the movie. And she wasn't impressed with Tom Cruise. Liked Val Kilmer. I was like, whatever.

Absolutely LOVED Top Gun: Maverick !!! Just enough nods to the original but stands as its own movie.  I think the plot points are superior in this one, definitely tugs at your heart and some nice comedic points mixed in and those flying scenes were...

Highly...HIGHLY recommend, I'll definitely be checking it out again!

I was also wondering why use f-18 insted f-35, it seams they would not alow them to film it in f-35s, there is planty of "that dont work like this" stuff in movie but its not red tails level ?

Movie is good enough to just go with the flow and just have fun expiriance.

They mention the reasons for not using F-35s in the movie if I recall correctly? But yeah, I also saw somewhere that the Navy declined them being featured more due to not wanting to show more of the sensitive technology in the cockpit. Personally, F-35s are lame, I wouldn't want to watch a movie focused on them anyway ?

Saw Top Gun Maverick a couple of nights ago on an IMAX screen.  First time for me back in a movie theater since 2019 before the pandemic.  Couldn't have picked a better film for a return to the movie theater experience.  Flying scenes were thrilling and well-filmed.  Helluva lot better than CGI.  Did the plot have holes?  Sure, but that's Hollywood.  Good acting and many funny lines.  I liked it better than the original in a lot of ways.  Also liked that it emphasized the values of "Duty Honor Country" and wasn't ashamed about its patriotism.  Probably why the Navy supported the production of the film.  Hope it helps recruiting for naval aviation programs and the military in general like the first Top Gun did.

To be fair - much (not saying all) of the flying was CGI/composite. Meaning that even if the aircraft is real, where and how it’s flying not, but rather faked via compositing.

I’ll leave the F-14 sequences alone since we know they didn’t have an F-14.

I’ll probably go again this week sometime. One more time on the big screen, and try to turn my critical brain off and just be along for the ride this time.
