EVGA says that a "newly-designed heatsink with Vapor Chamber heat plate spreads heat in two dimensions". I suspect that with the amount of heat it is going to produce, it probably needs to spread it over at least four...

Sure, but if by adding the third and fourth dimension, heat could be simultaneously redirected out of the PC case on one side and into the past on the other. By figuring that out EVGA would also have theoretically solved the climate crisis.

That seems unlikely, being that we're still struggling to do things like run GB without reprojection, let alone solving major global issues via use of time travel.

In all fairness, they’re still the least expensive GPUs out there. Configurator still has the 3090 FTW3U for $1919. Try that with msi!

Comes with its own black hole for heat dumping?

Expectation is street price is going to be 3-4k for the first month or two. Remember, the whole point of this card is to make sure AMD can't top the charts with the 6nm RNDA2 refresh cards coming out soon. They're trying to hold onto mind share until the RDNA3/Lovelace battle later this year.

That one is going to be wild.

Meh. If I was a pro overclocker, I may have been more excited about numbers on papers, but I’m just a deaf, dumb and blind kid ;)

True, but we aren't the target audience for this. The goal it to make sure the average low information buyer still thinks of nVidia as the best in the market so when they go buy a new 3D card, they go get a green box, regardless of what's actually in it.

Watched a bunch of vids on this one yesterday. The usual suspects that put these things thru their paces. They all came to the same conclusion that insofar as gaming goes the small percentage of gain over a regular 3090 or even a 3080Ti doesn't justify the extra price. If you were into content creation this is more up your alley but again--tests didn't show an astronomical ammount of gains there either! That and the crazy ammount of power this thing will draw! Jeez you could heat half your house with it! But the leaked specs for the 40 series say they'll draw that much at pretty much a minimum. Looks like new PSUs for everyone too!

And I've only been waiting patiently to finish the build I started in Mar/20 where I left off the video card because the new ones would be coming out in October. Right! Then that happened! Heck I'd be happy with a decent 3080 or Ti. At least they seem to be drifting slowly towards almost affordability the last week or so. I hear the US tarriff comes off soon so maybe that'll speed up! Keeping fingers crossed.

I wait out the 30 series. I stand by my Rift S and 1080 TI and see if there will be anything made actually worth the money.

When I bought the top of the line rig. It lasted up there about 3 month. Then the 20 series came right after the i9 mind you.

It has become ridiculous keeping up with the VR/ GPU  hype.

I am also confused

I gave 750 w PSU and 3090 says that is minimum. But 3080 TI need 850W

I’m gunning for the 3070 as a reason replacement for my still serviceable at 4K 1080.

I’m just not gullible enough to bother with anything higher. 3080 fine - if the price drops enough.

It depends as well on the quality of the PSU and the amps for the PCI-E 12V supply, and how stable it is for peaks in demand.

My experience with my 3080 and two PSUs:

The price is still ridiculous...... but if money is no object, you'll have the bragging rights.
My old LC Titan X just about runs the game with maxed out settings at 1440p.
I think the Devs have done a great job with optimization as my card is now 7 years old.
But i did splash out on a 1600w PSU.... so that will be OK when the prices eventually come back to earth!
And you guys across the pond think cards are expensive, i'm sure they add another 20% just for the UK market.........

I'd consider my new PC "complete" with a 3060 Ti in it. And even that card I find ridiculously overpriced at ~€550 to €600 and thus I won't be buying one anytime soon.

So IMO, spending well over €2000 on a graphics card is borderline insane ... and asking for that much money for one is ... indecent, I guess?

Especially if we're talking about a minimal performance uplift (compared to the 3090/3080 TI) for a substantial premium. As seems to be the case here according to all the established HW-YTers that I follow.

Even in the "before-times", I never got the need to spend around €/$1000 for the high-end cards when, say, a 1070 or even a 1060 would've been plenty for the vast majority of folks.

I never claimed to be sane. Unfortunately VR did that to me. I was once upon a time sane.

Historically, though, it's not out of line at $1000.  Today $1000 is just under $600 in 1998 dollars - when I spent $600 on an Obsidian X24 (dual V2 card on one board).  The only truly full-length card I've ever owned, and the only one that wouldn't run without aftermarket cooling.  It was a Quake 3 BEAST, though.

This.  VR has destroyed my sim expectations and driven me insane as well.  Chasing VR frames becomes an obsession.  iRacing has shown me what IL2 (and maybe one day DCS) *can* be with enough hardware, as I can achieve almost complete suspension of disbelief in VR with 90 FPS in a full field of racers, windsim blowing on the VR HMD by car speed, and chassis-mode shakers applying the bumps.  I get some of that in IL2, but can't keep 90 in busy MP, no prop-variable wind speed changes, and SimShaker Wings doing basic single-channel bumps.

Still Holding Out For A 3070

You could gunning for the 3090 for just $274
