Hapo54 Posted March 25, 2022 Posted March 25, 2022 ...I can't find anything aboot how IL2 runs on various hardware... ...I can find lots of info on Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020...is there any correlation here...???...MSF 2020 seems to do a little better at 4K on the Nivida cards... ...@ 1080 they are the same... ...right now, I am trying to compare a Nvidia RTX 3080 OC 12GB card to an AMD RX 6800XT card as a GPU for IL2... ...is there any advantage to the AMD or Nivida architecture for IL2...???... ...the thing aboot the RX 6800 XT that attracts me to it over the RTX 3080 OC 12 GB is the extra 4GB of VRAM...will that matter at all...???...the VRAM on the '3080 is faster... ...most people seem to consider the '3080 a better overall gaming solution but IL2/Flying Circus are the only games of interest to me...
kendo Posted March 25, 2022 Posted March 25, 2022 (edited) You don't mention what resolution you intend to run il-2 at yourself. I would imagine either of those two cards would have no difficulty in running the game. Not sure an extra 4GB of VRAM will really make any difference at all (and certainly not at 1080) But as a long-time user and viewer on the forums I think it would be fair to say that AMD cards/drivers have over the years had problems and issues that nVidia have not encountered in this sim. From that perspective nVidia would be my choice. Also, you may be interested to see a recent poll of users video cards created by the devs - the overwhelming majority run nVidia. Gambit21 Posted March 25, 2022 Posted March 25, 2022 I'm running a vanilla 1080 still (waiting for a 3070) and it runs fine at high settings @4K (as does DCS by the way) The big difference was upgrading the rest of the system, 32GB RAM and a Ryzen 5800 CPU. So then what does that info do to a "Best" GPU statement? Anything that I upgrade to will run it better, and already I don't really have any complaints. This why I'm not going to waste money on a 3080 - 3070 will do just fine. If the 3080 prices crash, then fine I'll revert back to that plan. Moral of the story, pay at least as much attention to your CPU, RAM etc if you haven't already. 1
=RvE=Windmills Posted March 25, 2022 Posted March 25, 2022 Running a 3080 10GB +10900k and it keeps the game running on ultra at 144fps without issues at 1440p. Getting AMD for the extra memory is kinda pointless, perhaps unless you are running some absurd 8K resolution where it might make a difference. Getting the Nvidia card for better software support and more solid drivers (though AMD may have improved here recently) seems like a no-brainer, unless you can get the AMD card significantly cheaper.
Hapo54 Posted March 25, 2022 Author Posted March 25, 2022 (edited) ...thank you for the prompt replies... ...the CPU I am using is Ryzen 7 5800X...32 MB 3200 MHZ Corsair RAM... ...great minds n' Schitt...LoL... ...I was leaning towards the 3080 but didn't know if there was anything to know...thanks again, stalwarts...!!!... ...I don't know what resolution I will run at, but I have a 4K monitor, so there is that... chiliwili69 Posted March 26, 2022 Posted March 26, 2022 The is a number of test done using a common automatic mission of 1 minute as a benchmark. Look here: The result are collected in this sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gJmnz_nVxI6_dG_UYNCCpZVK2-f8NBy-y1gia77Hu_k I would avoid the AMD GPUs for IL-2 (specially in VR) since they have an issue reported by several AMD GPU users here: 1

Not sure about 4k, but generally speaking both of these should be plenty to run IL-2 at 1080 or 1440. My 1060 3GB is the obvious bottleneck in my new system (plus CPU load doesn't seem to be a huge issue with the game, anyway) and I've dialed in my settings so that even this puny card manages to run at 1440 with FPS of 70+. Had to disable 4k textures and dial back some bells and whistles, but it runs fluidly and still looks pretty good to me. Seeing the obvious superiority of the two cards you mention, I'd have no doubts about 1440 for either of the two and I'd be surprised if they struggled even in 4K. S.
Jaws2002 Posted March 26, 2022 Posted March 26, 2022 As chiliwili69 said, for this game you are better off with Nvidia 3080 than 6800xt. Sadly, the latest AMD cards have issues in this game. I was also eyeballing the 6800xt/6900xt, because of their high efficiency, but sadly there were issues, so I got a 450W Nvidia room heater. 1
jollyjack Posted March 27, 2022 Posted March 27, 2022 Price was dropped IMO on a 3080ti Gaming OC12 card, but it's more than a 3080 still. I use one now for about 2 weeks, 3840x2160 monitor, but still have some occasional stutter with a MCU heavy mission it seems. But it runs cooler than my former 2080ti, so OC ing might be a option here.
