Hi guys, i've got some free time during the day, when I could play a quick game, so i launched my track ir and i was shocked by how badly i fly without VR.

I can't keep track on the enemy plane, can't really spot him, and i shoot like an Irish at 5 am on Sunday after 2 days of heavy drinking.

Do you have any experience of switching between VR and "normal" game?

I saved a startup file in order to quickly switch between VR graphics and better, what file do i need to back up in order to have different control schemes for vr and normal game?

Play outside of VR? Lol.

Seriously though, if I could no longer use VR (for some fantastical reason) I wouldn't use IL2 any more.

All the files under <install dir>\data\input

Actually only the .actions and .map file should suffice but might as well keep a backup of it all so you also have the devices.txt which stores the order your peripherals were detected in.

Not really. VR is a must for me in proper flight sims since the day I started using it. It just doesn't feel immersive at all without it now. The lack of VR is why I don't play CloD or RoF anymore, and why I rarely play a certain other current sim because VR performance is abysmal. The only "flight" sim I do play without it is a space sim, and I really miss it.

Instead of just backing up the folder Firdimigdi mentioned, I've created two JSGME "mods" so that I can easily switch between two different control layouts. I have one for planes and one for tanks.

I'm also incompetent without VR at this point.  I don't switch anything except unchecking the Enable VR box on the start screen. Same controls, same mapping, same everything. I frequently switch for testing in external view and taking screenshots. What would you change?

I'd like to use VR....I have a Quest 2.....but the hoops I have to jump through just to get the bloody thing working with Oculus's own software have put me off completely.

I did eventually try it with BoX, launched it (ticked VR) and all I got was a cinema screen version of BoX rather than the VR immersion 360 surround.

Maybe I am just lazy but in this day and age Oculus Quest 2 should be plug and play. Blimey even my DK2 worked in DCS and made me smile....but Quest 2 is an exercise beyond frustration for me. I mean I even had to change my default browser to Microsoft Edge just to create/login to my Facebook account.

Gave up.

This is the one time when my eye condition will actually be a plus.  I have had a very weak left eye since birth, which means I have monocular depth perception, hence, any type of artificial 3D device does not work for me.  Not stereo opticons, not 3D movies with the silly red and blue glasses, and not "VR" headsets.

Saved me a lot of money and aggravation, from what I have been reading here over the years.

Mostly camera controls. For VR i use minimal/max zooms, while in normal i prefer gradual zoom.

You can get a custom made lenses. I ordered mine from Zeiss. The difference between with and without them is night and day. You simply put them over regular lenses, They're very easy to install.

There are quite a few Q2 owners playing IL2 and other games, might want to ask in the VR subforum about this.

Both with the Rift S and G2 all I've ever had to do was turn the headset on and start the game/app I wanted to essentially. This was also the case for a CV1 and an HTC Vive that I had access to previously. So perhaps due to the streaming involved with the wired-or-wireless PC to Q2 connection there's some extra config step you need to do?

I can certainly relate to the gunnery issues. The stereoscopic view is such a help at judging distance and lead

Fly without VR, absolutely out of the question ?

No, I have no problem switching at all. I guess you just need to switch regularly. There are benefits to both VR and Screen/TrackIR so it would be a shame to be able to fly only one way.

It's a non treatable or correctable condition of the optic nerve.  Ah well, it's how I've always seen the world and has not stopped me from doing what I want to do.

I use VR with a Quest 2. As suggested, post in the VR forum. For me, the Quest 2 works (nearly) flawlessly and was easy to set up, so I'm positive we can help you get it working :) It'd be a total shame to have it lying around and not use it, especially given how much immersion VR adds to the game.

There's a couple of things I'd like to ask/suggest, but I do not want to hijack this thread so please start a new one in the VR forum and I'll get back to you :)

I am relatively new to this sim, I haven't played sims for about 10 years, I was a beta tester for iRacing way back when and always thought how cool it would be to have VR and be in the sim, as opposed to looking at a monitor. So I just kinda quit the whole gaming thing, then I was introduced to how far VR had developed over the last decade, as my wife had taken a job with a company that used the Oculus 2 headsets for their apps. The second I put it on I was hooked again, I side loaded Warplanes WW1 and played the guts out of it, but I knew there had to be more, so I started researching and figuring out what I needed to move to the next level of flight combat sims that weren't arcadish. So I saved some money and bought a gaming rig. I had purchased IL-2 years ago as a dvd, from the reviews I had read knew that it must be good, but I had never got around to playing it back then. So I joined Steam and repurchased it, initially I thought it would be just plug and play with the Oculus 2 but you're right Mysticpuma, it's certainly not! But trust me it is so rewarding once you get it setup and feel the incredible immersion that it allow you, you'll never go back to 2d. This forum is a wonderful resource with a lot of generous people to help you get it up and running. YouTube has lots of really good video's on it also, from all the posts I have read I don't think Oculus is any more difficult to setup than any other vr rig and well worth every minute of it.

That’s how I feel about my 4K monitor.

I don't necessarily find it hard to switch back and forth. I tend to have 'preferences' for which system I will use.  VR I use for offline career and scripted missions.  Online I'll tend to stay with TIR, simply cause it's easier to manage discord, srs, map site, OBS recording etc.  Also, online I tend to stick to ground attack, and I can pick out ground targets on my monitor easier than I can see them in VR.

So, like someone above said, perhaps simply switching often keeps your brain In Tune for both forms of tech, and it's easier to swap.  But overall, yeah, I love my VR and in any flight sim going forward, it will need to have native VR support to get my interest and my money.

It has. Seems like my G2 is broken and i have to wait for a new one for few weeks. Not sure if i want to switch back to TIR for that time. VR is just so cool, you just don't want to go back to 2D.

It wasn't until I had VR that I came to realize how badly my brain translates the 2D monitor. My brother would regularly thrash me in any kind of car racing sim. When I got VR I was beating him. Then he got it and we became equal.
It has hugely improved my flying ability, most notably gunnery. :)

I'm sure...immersed IN the 3D environment improves your SA without a doubt.

The only time I fly without vr is quick free flights with mouse control, or just watching AI do missions on autopilot. I can't fly without VR anymore.

Kinda a shame tbh, Since I'd love to go back to 1946. Maybe one day they'll remaster it LOL. Doubtful.

My only regret about giving away my Trackir is that I miss it when I'm flying Helos in Arma.

VR is great. My first sortie with my Rift S was awesome.

I flew IL 2 in fnbf. Man how big the plane was and I was sitting in a ww2 pit.

Latter is what keep me using it. It is simply a cheap way to be able to sit in a ww2 pit.

I do not like the scuba mask vision. I find it uncomfortable. But I am sitting in a cockpit

Same here! I only kept my TrackIR to fly in Arma, but since it died I haven't even botherer replacing it. Seems a bit of a waste of money now that I do most of my flying in VR.

I haven't been playing on VR for a long time (2 months) but I'm already spoiled by it.

Yesterday I decided to go into 2D to make a short video of us taking-off in P-38s and immediately noticed how weird it is to see the world through a monitor. Everything is small, like if you were watching the world through a window and you weren't part of it. The appropriate word would be disattached.

Sure VR has its negatives for me being the lack of a good antialiasing solution such as TAA which will help improve the picture quality but other than that VR is a net positive for me and there is no way I can come back to 2D.
