FlyinCoffin Posted March 20, 2022 Posted March 20, 2022 What did the soviets used in 44 and 45 as aircraft unit? Iam a little confused right now
Alexmarine Posted March 20, 2022 Posted March 20, 2022 (edited) New models of lend-leased planes like the P-39Q series, A-20s and some B-25s The evolution of the Yak family into the Yak-3, Yak-9M and the re-engined Yak-9U The evolution of the La-5FN into the La-7 The arrow winged Il-2M3 and really in the last days of the war in Europe some of the new Il-10 Later series of the Pe-2 along increasing numbers of the newer Tu-2 Of course many earlier models that were already in service in the second half of 1943 were also still in use, especially on secondary fronts Edited March 20, 2022 by Alexmarine 1 2
6./ZG26_Klaus_Mann Posted March 20, 2022 Posted March 20, 2022 The Yaks were aerodynamically very advanced Designs when they were first tested in Windtunnels. The Main Issues hampering its Performance were Fit and Fitment Issue, Restrictions on use of Strategic Materials and Power. As soon as Aluminum Sheet Metal became available it soon replaced Fabric and Plywood in many Places. Overall, the gain in Power and Quality Improvements as well as the many Drag-Reductions that were incrementally applied from 1941 to 1944 meant a speed gain of ca.100km/h at Ground Level without Water Injection and running on low Quality Fuels. The Yak-9U and Yak-3 were good Matches for the MW50 109s and Fw190As, matching them in Top Speed below 4000m, having a tighter Turn and good enough rate of climb. The La-5FN and La-7 are the same story but even more extreme with the La-7 being faster than the P-51s at Ground Level. 2
Finkeren Posted March 20, 2022 Posted March 20, 2022 One aircraft that is often forgotten is the IL-4, which is strange really, because it was produced in quite high numbers, far greater than for instance the Tu-2, it carried the heaviest bombload of any twin engine bomber in VVS service and it had super long range and was used to bomb Berlin throughout the war. It was far from an un-problematic aircraft, but it was far more significant than you'd think based on the low interest around it. 1 3

Iam a little confused right now I am confused that you are confused as we don't have a '44 or '45 VVS theater of operation. The lack of aircraft could be confusing but without a reason to be confused, as it is currently a non-issue. I am just confused.

It's a cool looking plane and it was used heavily as bomber and torpedo plane. It saw heavy use against axis fleets in black sea and in the north.
