Bullet flashes on target

Is there a mod available showing not so much the tracers from a P51 but the resulting flashes that are seen when the projectile hits the target? I can’t seem to find anything like that to download. Like this:

There are hit flashes in the stock game although I cannot remember if they look like your video exactly. Meplanes effects mod has changed the hitflash dds files I believe - I think he's rebadged himself as JSOflyer and possibly the WW2 pack is what you are looking for.

Found here

Note this changes a lot of effects so if it is just hit flashes you want then you'll need to do some experimentation making up a custom version of his mod with just the files for hit flashes.

Thanks. The stock effects don’t appear as pronounced as what I’m seeing in the actual gun cam footage. I’ll try try those out.

Yes I do think the hit flashes need to look bigger brighter going on the video at the top of the page.

I will try make this when I look at the effects pack again

Thanks for doing that!

And here are more examples with some straffing runs showing the same effects:

Thanks again. I was thinking about that, but what is the exact directory for those files? Is it under graphics\…. or game\…

They'd be in one of the 3 graphics gtp files where gtp files are like zip files.

If you do a forum search for ungtp you should find the tool you need to unpack gtp files.

The dds files you'd be looking for would be in graphics\textures\particles. Only a guess but there are a bunch of dds files with names like n_hitflash somthing.dds which are probably what you are looking for.

OK. Thanks. I will look around for those. Appreciate the help.

Found an older version of meplanes WW2 stock effects where I think there was a robust hit effect on a target. I don't remember exactly. Been working so much. Anyway, I think it's flare.bmp? Here's a shot of those files:

Now, exactly what to do with that .bmp I'm not sure. Tried to place particles folder in data/graphics/textures, but it did not seem to work.

Pardon a possibly silly question but it has caught out the best of us at times.........do you have mods enabled in the game settings?

Posted

Oh yes. I have hanger triples for example. Working fine.

Ok strange. Definitely the right location. pic of my version of meplanes's mod, showing the mod's dds will go to data/graphics/textures/particles.

I have tried to move some of the latest files in JOSflyer’s Second World War mod to the prior WW2 mod pack that he made in July of 2020 as that was what I was using to replicate the hit effects on armour, but can’t seem to make any progress with this. JOSflyer has done an outstanding job with his mods and improved effects tremendously. Great thanks to him. He is also correct about changing the dds files since I have not been able to remedy this at all. Post above is spot on. Just wish I could get back to the effects I had 2 years ago. Don’t know how to proceed from here. ??

A bit like these from the 2 minute 15 mark in Cliffs of Dover? Bright, visible, short and effective?

So just guessing but wouldn't the equivalent be the n_hitflame and n_hitflash family of dds files?

I really like the air to air effect (P-47 vs. He 111). I may need time to get used to the air to ground vs. vehicles though.

Thanks for your work?
As far as I can remember, these gun flashes were pretty good when they were first added.

Seems to be faint after cloud/sky/shader update??

I've done some testing and it seems that just replacing the firedot is enough to make the hit flash significantly more effective.

Are there any changes to the mod since you posted the original yesterday? Thanks again for your hard work!!

I'm using a mod called 'More Hitflash smaller calibre guns V2' and it increases the immersion factor by 100% - at least for me it does. It give that satisfying feeling of having actually done something, when you hit an enemy plane. It won't make you a better gunner, but it will sure make you try harder.
