IckyATLAS Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 There is a possibility to set in the sim graphic settings cockpit reflections to Low, Normal or High. I do not really understand this. It should be ON or OFF. Either we have reflection or not. I do not understand then what is the realistic one. Because a Low reflection or a High reflection depends on material and not on a setting. It is up to the rendering to define according to the material and light model how the reflection is. The logic here is not clear to me. 1
Koziolek Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 I think the logic is: it depends on how strong your PC is. It probably has a strong hit on fps so they implemented the lower settings 1
atomicmurph Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 I believe those settings affect how fast the reflection updates, not the quality. Gauges like the artificial horizon which moves will be updated at a slower rate to improve FPS. 1

The logic here is not clear to me. It's about the graphical fidelity of that setting and therefore the demands on the system. Otherwise your logic could applied to everything. "There are trees or there are not." "There is a horizon or there isn't." "There are other planes or their aren't". "I can see out of my cockpit or I can't." 1

You can quite easily have a high res (smooth) or low res (blocky) reflection, just like you can have a high res or low res shadow, or a high res or low res rear-view mirror. And as someone else mentioned, you can also have reflections that update with every frame (high), or ones that update at a lower fps than the rest of the sim (low) to save resources. Which method(s) IL-2 uses, I don't know because I tend to use the lowest settings for reflections in all sims. (They tend to look crap in VR regardless of setting.)

But yes more trees or less trees, or more grass or less grass is more easily understandable in terms of gradual choice than the cockpit reflection. But I did not consider the resolution or the update rate of the reflection as other posted. Question solved.
