There is another way without locking gun: have your gunner open his hatch so he looks outside of the tank, then the electrical engine will turn off after 30 seconds and the gun lock wont happen.
There was a keybind for it too but I need to find it….

Or they could just fix it already. Whether your in MP, or SP you are controlling up to 4 different positions. Wouldn't it make more sense to let the player decide when to use the gun lock. At the end of the day, its just another feature, not unlike a player deciding when to start/stop the engine, or aim and shoot the gun. Having a tank platoon drive into battle with the gun locked adds very little to realism.

As someone with real life experience in a tank, I am a little surprised at your work-around solution. How common was it to have the gunner stick his head out the hatch while driving into battle? And why would a supposed tank simulator model the gun lock feature so that the player would even have to consider something like that?

JD was just giving a work around, no one says this should be the norm.  You are leaving that part out of your quote.

it makes night missions quite complicated... this "effect" is more important from afar and tightens up as we get closer to our tank...

Just noticed this because of your comment, and that is strange because all I did was press the "QUOTE" button. I never added or edited the text in the quote. But your point is well taken.
